And Donald Trump gave out one endorsement that no one saw coming.
Donald Trump endorses Mike Johnson for Speaker of the House
Donald Trump and his conservative supporters were furious with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Johnson badly botched spending negotiations with Joe Biden and failed to deliver on Trump’s request to take care of the debt ceiling before Trump’s inauguration.
Trump wasn’t happy and his allies let it be known he was wondering if Johnson was the guy to shepherd Trump’s agenda through Congress.
“In the past couple weeks, we’ve questioned whether [Johnson has] been an honest broker,” one Trump advisor told POLITICO.
“No one thinks he’s strong. No one says, ‘Damn, this guy’s a fighter,’” another added.
Conservative Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie and Indiana’s Victoria Spartz expressed opposition to voting for Johnson as Speaker of the House when Congress gathers today for the start of the new Congress.
That meant Johnson could only afford to lose one more vote.
Even though Trump had misgivings about Johnson, Trump eventually issued a statement endorsing Johnson for Speaker of the House saying he won a sweeping victory on November 5 and now it was time for Republicans to unify and pass his agenda.
“LETS NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN. The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Johnson thanked Trump for his support.
“Thank you, President Trump! I’m honored and humbled by your support, as always. Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America. The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let’s get to work!” Johnson replied on X.
Neither Massie nor Spartz seemed moved by Trump backing Johnson.
“I respect and support President Trump, but his endorsement of Mike Johnson is going to work out about as well as his endorsement of Speaker Paul Ryan. We’ve seen Johnson partner with the democrats to send money to Ukraine, authorize spying on Americans, and blow the budget,” Massie wrote on social media.
“I understand why President Trump is endorsing Speaker Johnson as he did Speaker Ryan, which is definitely important. However, we still need to get assurances that @SpeakerJohnson won’t sell us out to the swamp,” Spartz posted on social media.
“President Trump will be able to save America only if we have a speaker with courage, vision and a plan – also public commitment to the American people how he will help deliver President Trump’s agenda to drain the swamp,” Spartz added.
Many conservatives are unhappy with Mike Johnson’s performance as Speaker of the House.
Johnson helped Joe Biden funnel money to Ukraine and reauthorize Section 702 of the FISA Act’s illegal warrantless wiretapping.
But Donald Trump thinks Johnson is the best man for the job.
Will that be enough for Johnson to keep his job?
