Leftists weren’t content to just lay about and lick their wounds.
And now Democrats have one sneaky plan to defeat Donald Trump.
Democrats look to 2026 Midterms
The 2026 Midterm election should be a good cycle for Democrats.
Traditionally, the party out of power gains seats at the federal and state levels as their supporters are more energized to turn out and the realities of governing chip away at the incumbent party’s coalition.
But a funny thing is taking place in the Democrat Party.
Ambitious politicians looking to run in red states are ditching the Democrat Party label to run as independents.
Donald Trump carried Michigan in two of the last three elections.
Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer is term limited.
There will be a wide-open race to replace Whitmer.
Whitmer won in 2018 as part of the blue wave Midterm during Trump’s first term in office.
The lay of the land currently looks vastly different.
Mike Duggan was elected Mayor of Detroit in 2014.
Normally, the long-time Democrat mayor of the state’s largest city would automatically be a top-tier candidate for a gubernatorial nomination.
But Duggan sees the Democrat Party brand – marred by unpopular stances on defunding the police, open borders, and wokeism in schools – as toxic.
And Duggan has announced he will run for Governor of Michigan as an independent, thinking there was no path to victory for a Democrat.
“I reached the conclusion that if you call yourself a Democrat, all the Republicans automatically line up against it. You call yourself a Republican, all the Democrats automatically line up against it,” Duggan told POLITICO. “And I really don’t think there’s a path forward for this state if you don’t get the reasonable folks in both parties to work together.”
Democrats are also looking at the red state Senate races they need to win to flip control of the chamber in 2026 and are coming to a similar conclusion – that the best course of action is to run left-wing candidates who are registered independents as opposed to Democrats.
“Anyone looking at the Senate map, not just in 2026 but over the next six years and beyond, sees that we need a path to chipping into the Republican majority,” a Democratic strategist relayed to POLITICO. “And it doesn’t necessarily mean electing Democrats. But it means changing what the denominator is that we need to get to a majority.”
Democrat megadonor John Morgan already changed his party registration to independent and is talking about running statewide in Florida with a campaign built on trying to tap into Donald Trump’s populist impulses.
“I don’t know if Trump is a stable genius, but he’s a f***ing genius,” Morgan said. “He tapped into something the Republicans never saw, which was anger and populism on that side.”
Maine independent Senator Angus King ran the model Democrats want to copy.
King ran as a registered independent but caucuses with the Democrats and votes the far-left line in Congress.
And King lamented that when he won election to the U.S. Senate in 2012, Democrats Senators represented ruby red states, but that those seats are all out of reach thanks to the toxic national brand for the Democrat Party.
“When I came to the Senate, we had Democratic senators from North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, two from Montana, Florida, Arkansas, Indiana and about four or five more,” King stated.
The radical left took over the Democrat Party and remade it into the party of amnesty, transgenderism, defunding the police, and Black Lives Matter rioters.
This rebranding repelled Middle America.
And now Democrats fear they can only run and win as Democrats in deep blue enclaves.
