The NFL Just Responded to Rioters in Macron’s France as Paris Game’s Kickoff Looms

Oct 20, 2026

French rioters have torched schools and dragged thousands of people away in handcuffs.

President Macron is begging for calm while his own government lets masked rioters run entire neighborhoods.

The league just responded to the chaos with the clock on kickoff running out.

Six Thousand Arrests and a Country on Fire

What started in late September as student complaints about overcrowded classrooms and crumbling school buildings has turned into something else entirely.

Rioters have hit more than seven hundred schools across France.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said more than 400 people were detained after an October 1 clash in Aubervilliers alone, many of them minors.

Nationwide, the unrest has now produced more than six thousand arrests.

On October 17, protesters flooded the streets nationwide over the cost of living, setting cars ablaze along the Canal Saint Martin in Paris.

Foreign policy analyst Niles Gardiner, a former aide to Margaret Thatcher, told The National News Desk the unrest is "definitely not about education" anymore.

He said rioters are "literally burning down schools" and attacking the teachers and students still inside them.

Gardiner called it "lawlessness" and "anarchy," and said France is "descending into a state of barbarism."

He also said a "significant percentage" of the rioters are second and third generation migrants, tying the chaos to what he called "very high levels of mass migration to France."

Gardiner said he agrees with President Donald Trump's read that the violence is linked to illegal immigration.

Even French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has condemned the violence to Parliament, blaming far left agitators for hijacking a movement that started with students.

The Saints and Steelers Are Flying in Anyway

The New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers are set to meet at Stade de France on October 25 for the NFL's first regular season game ever played in France.

The league said Sunday night that "preparations continue as scheduled" and that there has been "no disruption or impact at league sites."

Saints senior vice president of communications Greg Bensel said the team has run daily security briefings with its partners in France and backs the league's call to play.

Team staff have already been on the ground in France for days with zero disruption reported, according to Bensel.

The U.S. State Department already had France listed at Level 2 before the latest unrest, warning Americans that "terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks in France and may attack with little to no warning."

None of that has moved the NFL off its schedule.

Not Like 2018

Back in December 2018, officials used supposedly violent Yellow Vest protests over fuel prices to shut down the Eiffel Tower.

This time Macron is letting an American football game go forward while France really burn, which tells you everything about how he ranks his priorities.

Gardiner said there simply are not enough police in France right now to handle the number of people rioting.

The Saints and Steelers are walking into that shortage anyway, and the league is still calling it business as usual.

That is not timidity, that is the kind of toughness this league's fans actually respect, and it stands in stark contrast to Emmanuel Macron, who let masked rioters dictate the national conversation for weeks instead of ending it.

Gardiner also placed blame on far left agitators, naming Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the Communist-aligned challenger expected to run for the French presidency next year, as part of the problem.

If France wants fewer riots, it might start by asking why so many of the people throwing fire bombs are the second and third generation product of immigration policies nobody in Paris will touch.
