Nick Shirley Walked Into Ceuta to Film Spain’s Invasion and Barely Walked Out

Sixty thousand migrants surged across the Moroccan border and swallowed a quiet Spanish city whole.

Independent journalist Nick Shirley walked into that warzone with a camera and no backup.

Then a man with a blade decided Shirley wasn't leaving Ceuta the way he came in.

A Rock Storm and a Blade Turn a Reporting Trip Into a Foot Chase

Shirley didn't go to Ceuta for a press junket.

He went because the corporate media wouldn't.

Sixty thousand migrants, overwhelmingly military-age men, had just poured into a Spanish city of roughly 84,000 people.

Dozens died trying to get there.

Thousands more are still hiding in the hills, waiting for their shot at mainland Europe.

Shirley walked the streets anyway, camera rolling, interviewing the men who crossed and the residents left to deal with the fallout.

That's when it turned.

A man started throwing rocks.

Then bottles.

Then he pulled a knife.

"He has a knife," Shirley shouted to his cameraman as they bolted down the hill.

The attacker chased them, screaming that he planned to stab them both.

Spanish police reached the two journalists before he did and escorted them out.

Sanchez Opened the Gates and Left a City to Fend for Itself

This didn't happen in a vacuum.

Spain's Supreme Court stripped the government's power to send back migrants who arrive by sea, and Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez let the border crumble under the weight of it.

Video has surfaced of migrants openly crediting Sanchez for letting them across.

Rabat reportedly waved the crossing through on its side of the line, and Madrid's gates opened right along with it.

Sanchez showed up in Ceuta after the fact and blamed smugglers.

He never mentioned the court ruling his own government left standing.

His own Interior Ministry rejected Ceuta's request to declare a national emergency, calling it flatly "not possible."

Ceuta has been down this road before.

In 2021, roughly 8,000 migrants swam and climbed their way in over two to three days, timed to a diplomatic spat with Morocco over Western Sahara.

Back in 2017, hundreds more stormed the same fence with rocks and metal bars, injuring dozens of officers on both sides.

This time it was more than seven times the 2021 number, and dozens didn't survive the crossing.

The pattern is the pattern.

Morocco loosens the valve whenever it wants leverage over Madrid, Spain's legal system ties its own hands, and a Spanish city pays the price every single time.

Nobody in Sanchez's government has explained why the same crisis keeps happening on his watch.

President Trump watched the footage from Camp David and didn't mince words.

"That's going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in," Trump told Fox News.

He's not wrong to connect the dots.

A country that can't control who walks across its border eventually can't control what happens to the journalists documenting it either.

Notice what didn't happen here.

CNN didn't send a crew into that hillside.

MSNBC didn't have a reporter getting chased down a Ceuta street with a knife at his back.

It took an independent journalist with a phone and a camera to show America what an open border actually looks like once the cameras from official outlets pack up and leave.

But there’s a story underneath that few are talking about at all.

Meanwhile, it looks a whole lot like the United States Congress just sent Morocco $40 million and nodded at its claim on the Spanish territory right before the surge.

U.S. taxpayers shouldn’t bankroll foreign border chaos or territorial games played by America’s supposed allies.

Secure our own borders, end the open-checkbook foreign aid, and stop subsidizing Europe’s migration disasters.

Sovereignty starts at home.
