Lawmakers hauled National Museum of American History Director Anthea Hartig in front of the House Oversight Committee last month.

They wanted answers about a staff training toolkit that labeled objectivity, individualism, and politeness as characteristics of "white supremacy culture."

Hartig tried to distance herself, claiming the museum never wrote the material and insisting "we're not promoting any ideology."

Rep. Brandon Gill wasn't buying it.

Neither was Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez, who pointed out that half a dozen current and former Smithsonian employees co-authored the toolkit, including a staffer inside Hartig's own museum.

Gonzalez didn't soften the diagnosis.

"This is what Marxists do," he told the committee.

Here's the part that should really make your blood boil.

The Smithsonian already got caught doing this exact thing once before.

Back in 2020, the National Museum of African American History and Culture published a chart describing "objective, rational linear thinking" as a trait of white culture.

Public backlash forced the museum to pull it and apologize.

Three years later, staff were quietly teaching the same poison in a training toolkit anyway.

The apology was theater.

The ideology never left the building.

Under Biden, the number only climbed: $1.11 billion for fiscal year 2021, then a record $1.24 billion by fiscal year 2024.

Trump's team then reversed course, proposing the smallest Smithsonian request in years for both fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027.

The timing is not an accident.

The budget move follows a 162-page White House report that brands the Smithsonian's flagship history museum an ideological outlier and orders it to overhaul what it teaches, who runs it, and where the money goes.

That's not history.

That's a hostage note dressed up as a museum placard.

A museum that spends sixteen months getting investigated instead of running its exhibits has already told you everything about its priorities.

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III fired back with a staff memo defending the museum's work as accurate and driven by scholarship.

Bunch can write all the memos he wants.

For sixteen months, White House investigators pulled internal records, sat down with curators, and walked the exhibit floors themselves.

They warned back in December that Congress could pull funding entirely if the Smithsonian kept slow-walking records.

The budget cut is the receipt.

The Money Talks Louder Than the Memos

This isn't Trump's first time using the federal checkbook to discipline an institution he says weaponized taxpayer money against the country it's supposed to serve.

He already moved to defund NPR and PBS, calling them "radical left monsters" in a social media post.

He took over the Kennedy Center.

He squeezed universities that refused to drop their diversity bureaucracies.

The pattern is simple and it works every time.

Identify the institution using your tax dollars to teach your grandkids that America is a racist, irredeemable mistake.

Cut the check.

This is a sprawling federal operation: 21 museums, the National Zoo, and nearly 157 million objects and specimens, propped up for decades by close to guaranteed taxpayer support.

For decades it operated like an untouchable federal fiefdom, immune to accountability because it wrapped itself in the word "Institution."

That immunity just expired.

Whether Congress actually adopts Trump's lower numbers is still an open question, but the message already landed in every curator's office in Washington.

Every museum in that 21-museum network just watched what happens when Washington finally reads what you've been teaching.

The next director who wants a bigger check knows exactly what to fix first.

The people who spent years telling staff that objectivity, individualism, and politeness are symptoms of white supremacy just found out the president controls the budget, and he's done pretending he doesn't notice.
