Trump Names the RINO Senate Holdout Blocking Permanent Daylight Saving Time

Oct 4, 2026

The House passed it 308 to 117.

Then it hit the Senate and stalled.

Now Trump wants to know why one of his own party's senators is the one standing in the way.

House Passes Permanent Daylight Saving Time With Bipartisan Support

The bill is the Sunshine Protection Act, which Trump is now branding the "No More Changing of Clocks Act."

It would end the twice-a-year ritual of springing forward and falling back by locking the country into permanent daylight saving time.

The House passed it in July by a lopsided 308-117 vote.

The Senate unanimously passed a similar version back in 2022, only to watch it die in the House that time around.

This time the roles are reversed, and Trump isn't waiting quietly.

He took to Truth Social to call the twice-a-year ritual "a ridiculous clock changing process" that "costs our country a fortune" and is "bad for crime, stress on people, sports, and just about everything else you can imagine."

Republicans in the Senate, he wrote, "have to get moving" on what he's now calling the "No More Changing of Clocks Act."

Then he named the man he says is standing in the way: Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton.

It's not like the Senate has no vehicle sitting ready, either. Florida Senator Rick Scott has been carrying this bill since he arrived in Washington.

Scott ran it through a Senate Commerce Committee hearing literally titled "If I Could Turn Back Time: Should We Lock the Clock?" He pushed the same policy as Florida's governor, signing state legislation to keep Florida on daylight saving time year-round the moment Washington gives the green light.

The bill has a sponsor, a committee hearing, and a House supermajority behind it. What it doesn't have is a floor vote.

Cotton's Objection Is Real, but It's Not the Point

Cotton isn't blocking this out of spite.

He's warned that permanent daylight saving time would make winter "a dark and dismal time for millions of Americans." Kids in Arkansas, he's pointed out, could be heading to the bus stop in the dark for "three, four, even five hours in the morning without seeing the sun."

He's not out on an island with that concern, either. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has made the same argument on medical grounds, warning that locking in daylight saving time would leave the body's internal clock permanently out of sync with actual sunrise.

Ski resort operators in several states have raised it too, pointing to morning darkness making avalanche control and lift operations harder in winter. Orthodox Jewish groups have flagged it for a different reason – it would push sunrise past the start of the workday and interfere with morning prayer requirements tied to first light.

It's a legitimate concern shared by people with very different reasons for holding it, and it's close to the same objection that sank the last version of this bill in 2022.

But it's still one senator's objection standing against a 308-117 House vote and a president ready to sign the thing tomorrow.

Trump Is Right That America Is Done With the Clock Switch

Nobody misses losing an hour of sleep every spring or stumbling home in the dark every fall.

The safety case Trump is making is the one most Americans already agree with, and it's why this bill cleared the House by nearly a hundred and ninety votes.

Cotton's winter-sunrise warning is worth weighing. The sleep doctors and the ski resorts raising it alongside him are worth hearing out too.

None of it is worth letting one senator hold up a bill the House passed by a landslide and the country has wanted for years.

Congress has been kicking this exact can for years, through multiple presidents and multiple versions of this same bill dying in whichever chamber didn't pass it that time.

Trump just put a name on the reason it's still stuck. That's usually the point where these things finally start moving.
