Jon Gruden Took Trump’s Ohio Stage and Dug Up Jon Husted’s Old Dayton Game Film

Oct 6, 2026

Ohio voters fired Sherrod Brown in 2024 and he still wants back in the Senate.

Then a Super Bowl champion coach showed up at a Trump rally outside Dayton to stop him.

What Jon Gruden dug up about his old college teammate turned a campaign stop into a pep rally.

Gruden Brought a Halftime Speech to Vandalia

Gruden took the stage at President Trump's rally inside the Butler-Vandalia Student Activity Center on October 3.

He didn't sound like a TV analyst making a polite cameo.

He sounded like a coach down six at the half with his whole season on the line.

This is the same Gruden who won Super Bowl XXXVII with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 39, the youngest head coach ever to win one at the time.

He spent nearly a decade in the Monday Night Football booth before the Raiders brought him back to the sideline.

"I just came back for one reason and I'm from Ohio," Gruden told the crowd.

Then he ran through his Buckeye State roots like a starting lineup – born in Sandusky, parents from Cleveland, college at the University of Dayton.

That last stop is where the story turns.

Gruden was a quarterback on the 1985 Dayton Flyers.

One of the guys covering receivers on that same team was a scrappy defensive back from Montpelier named Jon Husted.

Husted is now the Republican senator from Ohio, and Gruden came to make sure he stays one.

The Teammate Gruden Says Never Quit on Anybody

Gruden didn't pitch Husted with talking points.

He pitched him with game film.

"He intercepted 17 passes on the gridiron," Gruden said of his old teammate.

Husted went on to help Dayton win the 1989 Division III national championship.

No consultant dreamed up that bio.

Husted is an adopted kid from a small town in northwest Ohio who had to earn his way onto that field.

Gruden's verdict was blunt.

"He will never quit, ever on you or anybody," he said.

Trump clearly enjoyed the show, calling Gruden a winner and joking that the coach told him the crowd was rougher than a football game.

He even claimed the Vandalia crowd had more spirit than the Ohio State game that same day.

The President gave the crowd its marching orders.

"Just pretend that I'm running. When I run, we win," Trump said.

Vivek Ramaswamy, running for governor, worked the same crowd.

Gruden closed with a coach's two-minute drill, reminding everyone that Ohio's early voting opened on October 6 and urging every supporter to bring friends to the polls.

Sherrod Brown Wants a Do-Over Ohio Already Denied Him

The man on the other side of this game is Sherrod Brown.

His 2024 loss sent Bernie Moreno to the Senate in his place.

Brown voted for Joe Biden's American Rescue Plan and the so-called Inflation Reduction Act – the spending binges that sent grocery bills through the roof.

Now he wants the seat JD Vance left behind when he became Vice President.

Governor Mike DeWine appointed Husted to that seat in January 2025, and the special election on November 3 decides who serves out the rest of the term.

Brown is betting Ohio forgot why it fired him.

A Fox News poll in August had Brown at 53 percent to Husted's 45 percent.

That's not a reason to panic.

That's a reason to show up, which is exactly what Gruden was yelling at the crowd to do.

Coaches Have Delivered for Trump Before

Bob Knight stood next to Trump in Indianapolis in April 2016 and vouched for him like he was recruiting a point guard.

"There has never been a presidential candidate prepared to the length that this man is," Knight said.

Days later, Trump won Indiana and Ted Cruz dropped out that same night.

Lou Holtz, who grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio, spoke for Trump at the 2020 Republican convention.

Coaches speak a language Middle America trusts – toughness, loyalty, showing up when it hurts.

Gruden speaks it better than almost anyone alive.

He didn't come to Vandalia to read policy papers.

He came to vouch for a teammate he watched pick off passes back in 1985.

No 30-second TV ad can buy that kind of endorsement.

Sherrod Brown has the polling edge on paper.

Husted now has a Super Bowl coach running the huddle, and Ohio voters have until November 3 to decide which one matters more.
