JD Vance Says Everything After He Was Asked About Backing Ted Cruz for President

Oct 10, 2026

JD Vance already promised Donald Trump a sit down about running for president after the midterms.

A reporter cornered Vice President Vance at the White House and asked if he would back Ted Cruz instead.

Nobody in that room expected his answer to sound the way it did.

Vance Called Cruz Clearly Running and Still Would Not Commit

A reporter asked Vance point blank whether he would support Ted Cruz's 2028 presidential bid.

Vance would not take the bait.

He called it "an innovative way to ask the question," then pivoted without answering it.

Republicans should "focus not on a job a few years from now" but on "the midterms," Vance said.

Pressed further on Cruz specifically, Vance offered praise that stopped well short of an endorsement.

"Ted is a very authentic and likable guy, and I'm sure he'll do great," Vance said.

Separately, Vance told Megyn Kelly that Cruz is "clearly" running for president in 2028, an admission he never walked back.

Hegseth Gets a Mention While Cruz Gets a Shrug

Vance did not stop at declining to back Cruz.

He added that he could support Pete Hegseth "and a whole host of people" for president.

Cruz got named specifically and still finished behind an unnamed list of other Republicans.

Hegseth has never run for office in his life, and Vance can mention him in the same breath as a three term senator without anyone blinking.

That is what a deep bench looks like when a party is not panicking about who comes next.

The exchange happened while Vance was filling in as White House press secretary, not in some unguarded moment he can later blame on a bad transcript.

Nothing about that moment was accidental.

Vance had every chance to simply say yes or no, and chose a well rehearsed deflection instead.

Back in November, Vance called questions about his own 2028 ambitions "premature," insisting he was focused on "helping Republicans defend their slim Senate and fragile House majorities in the midterms."

He also told reporters he would "sit down" with Trump after the midterms specifically to talk through a presidential run.

Democrats Cannot Even Agree Who Is Running Their Party

Compare that to the party on the other side.

CNN analyst Harry Enten looked at the 2028 Democratic field and called it "a total mess" and "a downright clown car."

Gavin Newsom leads their field at 19 percent, Kamala Harris sits at 18 percent, Pete Buttigieg polls at 13 percent, and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez trails at 12 percent.

Nobody on that list breaks 25 percent, and Enten said Democrats have not seen a primary field this fractured since 1992.

CNN's analysts say Democrats remain split on whether their next nominee should run as a progressive, an anti Trump crusader, or a moderate, with no agreement in sight.

Republicans, meanwhile, are arguing about whether their 2028 nominee should focus on the midterms first out of discipline, not because nobody knows who is even in the race.

The 2028 Race Is Already Happening in Iowa Whether Republicans Admit It or Not

Vance and Cruz have both been touring Iowa this midterm cycle, officially to help down ballot Republicans in three competitive House races, a tight Senate contest, and an open governor's race.

Republican strategist David Kochel was blunter about what is really going on.

The competitive map gives Republicans "a pretty healthy parade of 2028 potentials coming through to try to do what they can to help in the midterms," Kochel said, calling it "the best excuse to come to Iowa."

Vance wants Republicans to believe the midterms come first and the presidency comes later.

He has already scheduled the conversation with Trump that says otherwise.

Cruz does not need Vance's endorsement to keep running.

He just needs Vance to keep refusing to rule it out.
