Clarence Thomas Just Laid Waste to Leftists’ Intellectual Segregation and He Only Needed a Savannah Library

Joe Biden ran the hearings that tried to destroy Clarence Thomas and never apologized.

Now Thomas is on record explaining exactly what he thinks about the people who tell him how to think.

And he just used a library in Savannah to ask his critics a question they cannot answer.

The Left's Racial Loyalty Test Has a Name Now

Clarence Thomas appeared on Verdict with Ted Cruz this week and said something the left is not going to be able to ignore.

When Cruz noted that Thomas had never liked to conform, Thomas didn't reach for academic language.

He reached for something he and his peers said when they were young.

"The only two things I have to do is stay black and die," Thomas told Cruz.

That was the saying he and others used when someone told them what they had to do because of their skin color.

It was a retort. A rejection. A refusal to be owned.

Thomas has been delivering that rejection to Democrats for 35 years – and they have never accepted it.

When he arrived in Washington, the message was clear: think the way we tell you to think.

And when Thomas declined that invitation, they had a word for it.

Confused.

Thomas has a different word for who's actually confused.

"You're confused," he said. "You confuse me with someone who's been in indentured servitude or something."

Read that again.

Indentured servitude.

That is what Thomas believes the left demands from Black Americans who enter public life – ideological compliance in exchange for the left's political protection.

He rejected that contract in his twenties. He's still rejecting it at 78.

The Library Question They Cannot Answer

Thomas didn't stop at the indentured servitude line.

He started with the Savannah Public Library from his childhood.

It was segregated.

Was it right that he couldn't go in?

Obviously not.

What if they let him in but banned certain floors?

Wrong.

What if certain stacks were off-limits?

Wrong.

What if certain books were marked off-limits?

Wrong.

And then Thomas asked the question that ends the argument.

"Why is it then that you have a problem with me embracing certain ideas in certain books?"

Because there is no answer.

The left spent decades fighting physical barriers that kept Black Americans from accessing ideas.

And then those same people turned around and told Clarence Thomas which ideas he was allowed to embrace.

Thomas has had 35 years to sharpen this argument. It shows.

"I would prefer not to go in the building," Thomas said, "to not being able to embrace the ideas that I find that I agree with or that are important."

He would rather be locked out entirely than be let in and told where he can walk.

That is not confusion. That is principle.

The Pattern the Left Uses on Every Black Conservative Who Thinks for Himself

Clarence Thomas is not the first Black conservative the left has tried to reprogram.

Ben Carson heard the same thing.

That he was confused.

That he had wandered off the plantation.

That successful Black men who reject the left's agenda are somehow betraying their community.

The left does not have this conversation with white conservatives.

They don't tell Ted Cruz which books he's allowed to read.

They don't call Mitch McConnell confused for disagreeing with liberal orthodoxy.

The accusation only comes when the person is Black – because the left's intellectual segregation is, at its core, a racial rule.

Thomas has been fighting it longer than most of his critics have been alive.

He grew up being told Black men didn't belong in certain spaces.

He survived confirmation hearings designed to humiliate him before he had made a single ruling.

He kept writing opinions that will outlast every one of the people who called him names.

This is the argument Thomas has been making his entire life – finally stated with enough clarity that even the people attacking him might understand what they are actually doing.

They probably won't.

But the rest of us do.
