Bill Maher continues to serve as a harsh critic of the far-Left.
Maher knows his party has lost its way.
And now Bill Maher told Jay Leno the one thing about Democrats he hates the most.
Bill Maher slams the Left as agents of intolerance
Comedian and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno was the latest guest on Maher’s Club Random podcast.
Leno was known during his late-night hosting days as a comedian who hit both sides of the aisle.
In fact, Leno was most famous for skewering Bill Clinton nightly in his monologues during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
Leno hosted the number one rated late-night talk show because he understood that Americans of different political beliefs can come together around common interests, and he never used his comedy as a partisan weapon.
During the podcast, Leno and Maher discussed how rare that is today.
Leno mentioned the time that singer Sammy Davis Jr. posed for a photograph with President Richard Nixon, which was seen as a controversial move at the time.
“So what?” Maher wondered when Leno mentioned the picture of Davis and Nixon.
The Left saw Nixon – as they do every Republican President – as the personification of evil in the modern world.
Nixon inherited the Vietnam War from Democrat President Lyndon Baines Johnson and eventually ended the draft in 1973.
But left-wingers saw Nixon as a warmonger and a Hitler-like figure.
Leno noted all of this in his response to Maher.
“I know, but at the time he was seen as a traitor,” Leno stated.
Maher also told Leno that the Left going after Sammy Davis because he posed for a photograph with Richard Nixon was an early example of cancel culture in America.
“Sammy, when he hugged Nixon, he was ostracized by the Left a lot. That was an early harbinger of that,” Maher noted.
Maher decries cancel culture
Maher thanked Leno for bringing up that example to show that politics – and American life – wasn’t always this way.
“It’s so funny you mention that because today we live in this time where you’re not allowed to have friends from the other side or cross lines politically, and I forgot that there’s an example of that way back when,” Maher added.
Maher explained to Leno that what he hated the most about the Left was their conviction that your politics were a moral statement about you as a person.
Telling Leno he would never become a Republican or a Trump supporter, Maher did curse out Democrats who want to excommunicate family members from their lives if they voted for Trump.
“A guy who crossed lines politically. Oh, the worst thing you could ever do. Be friends with a Republican? Ah! Call 911! This is what I f***** hate about the Left. You know — and they’re not going to get me over to the Trump side, which they think they will sometimes — but just the idea of ‘cut your family off for Thanksgiving if they voted for the wrong guy.’ F*** off, you f***,” Maher declared.
