John Sununu Just Handed Democrats a New Hampshire Problem They Didn’t See Coming

Chris Pappas launched his Senate campaign attacking Elon Musk and billionaires.

A brand new poll just gave Republicans a reason to laugh at that strategy.

John Sununu is now beating him in a state Democrats thought was already won.

The Poll Numbers Republicans Aren't Supposed to Be Winning

A University of New Hampshire survey has John Sununu ahead of Chris Pappas 45 percent to 43 percent, the second consecutive independent poll to show him on top in a state Democrats have banked on for two decades.

This wasn't a one-off.

A separate National Republican Senatorial Committee poll conducted by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates found the same lead holding among 600 likely voters surveyed August 27 through 30, with Sununu up 37 percent to 36 percent, a gap inside that poll's margin of error.

Pollsters David Lee and Travis Tunis didn't bury the lede.

"These results clearly challenge the prevailing media narrative that Democrats have a lock on New Hampshire," they wrote.

Two different pollsters, two different methodologies, the same result: Sununu on top.

Nearly a quarter of voters in the NRSC poll are still undecided.

That's a lot of persuadable people left on the table with the primary just days away.

Why Trump Wants This Race More Than Almost Any Other Seat

Republicans hold the Senate 53 to 47 right now, and New Hampshire is exactly the kind of seat that pads a majority instead of just protecting one.

That matters for anyone who wants Trump's judges confirmed and his agenda funded without a single defection from Susan Collins turning into a crisis.

Every extra seat is a vote Republicans don't have to beg for.

Retiring Democrat Jeanne Shaheen is leaving the seat open for the first time since 2008, when Sununu himself lost a rematch against her.

New Hampshire politics runs in the family.

Sununu's father served as the state's governor and as White House chief of staff.

His brother Chris later held the governor's office too.

After losing that 2008 rematch, Sununu built a career in the private sector, and he's framing this run as a return, not a reinvention.

Trump gave Sununu his full backing ahead of Tuesday's primary, calling him an "America First Patriot" who will "work tirelessly to advance our America First Agenda."

"HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN," Trump wrote.

That endorsement settled a real primary fight.

Sununu had been running against former Senator Scott Brown for the nomination, and Trump's backing left no ambiguity about which one national Republicans wanted carrying the seat in November.

Sununu says he's running to lower the temperature in Washington, not raise it.

"Somebody has to step up and lower the temperature. Somebody has to get things done," he said, describing a Congress that "just seems loud, dysfunctional, even angry."

The Populist Pitch That Isn't Landing in New Hampshire

Pappas built his entire campaign launch around one target: Elon Musk.

He accused the administration of "giving big tax breaks to billionaires like Elon Musk" and told voters "the system's rigged" against them.

It's the same class-warfare script Democrats have run for a decade, and the new polling suggests New Hampshire voters aren't buying it any more than voters bought it the last time.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee wasted no time calling Pappas "extremely out of touch" with the state's actual priorities, pointing to his record on border security.

New Hampshire voters don't need a lecture about billionaires.

They need someone who can get a budget passed, and right now the polling says they trust the Republican more.

Democrats have treated this seat as a lock since Shaheen first won it.

The next poll will tell them whether Tuesday's primary just turned that assumption into a very expensive mistake.
