Nancy Pelosi Just Threw Hakeem Jeffries Under the Bus Over Socialism Vote

One hundred ninety two House Democrats refused to condemn socialism this week.

Two Democrats who let that vote happen are now facing punishment from party leadership.

Nancy Pelosi just made it clear she thinks Hakeem Jeffries cannot control his caucus.

The Rule Vote That Split Democrats Down the Middle

Maine's Jared Golden and Washington's Marie Gluesenkamp Perez crossed the aisle on a razor-thin procedural rule, H. Res. 1499, letting it pass 210 to 208.

That single rule opened the floor to a resolution condemning socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America, along with Golden's lobstermen protection bill for Maine's fishing industry.

Without those two votes, Republicans could not have brought the anti-socialism measure to the floor at all, and by unwritten House tradition the minority party votes against a rule like this no matter what is inside it.

Golden broke that tradition without apologizing for it, telling one reporter flatly: "I think it's well established that I don't really do whip calls."

Asked whether leadership expected better of him, Golden was blunter still, saying Democratic leaders "couldn't possibly think that I would vote against my own bill, right?"

He added he "had other 'yes' votes lined up, by the way, they just weren't necessary," which is a polite way of saying leadership's math was already broken before he cast a single vote.

Golden framed the substance of his choice in plain terms too: "If it's a choice between Maine fishing communities and the right whales, I'm going with the fishermen and the families and the communities that they live in."

Minority Whip Katherine Clark's office confirmed she had no idea it was coming, telling reporters simply, "No she didn't," when asked if she'd been warned.

Jeffries said the same thing in different words: he "didn't get a heads up" from either lawmaker before the vote.

That is a whip operation that got blindsided by two of its members on a vote razor-thin enough that either defection alone would have sunk it.

192 Democrats Chose Not to Condemn Socialism

The resolution itself, H.Res. 1490, sponsored by Republican Jeff Crank of Colorado, passed 220 to 192 and did three things: condemned socialism and the DSA by name, reaffirmed support for the Constitution, and backed the SAVE Act's citizenship and ID requirements for voting.

Only eight House Democrats voted yes: Golden, Gluesenkamp Perez, Henry Cuellar, Vicente Gonzalez, Don Davis, Kathy Castor, Gabe Vasquez, and Darren Soto.

Two more, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania and Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, voted present, which is Washington's way of saying yes and no at the same time.

That leaves 192 sitting members of Congress on record refusing to vote against a political ideology that has killed more people in the last century than almost any other system of government.

Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens called the resolution "cynical" and a "false choice," insisting she opposed the voter ID language, not the anti-socialism language it was bundled with.

That argument might land better if her party had not spent years fighting citizenship verification and voter ID at every turn, bundled resolution or not.

It also is not new: Massachusetts Democrat Jim McGovern dismissed a nearly identical resolution back in 2023 as an "embarrassment," calling it "stupid" and "written poorly," which tells you Democratic leadership has treated condemning socialism as a joke for at least three years running, not a one-time miscalculation.

Pelosi's Message to Jeffries Doubles As a Warning Shot

Nancy Pelosi did not attack Golden or Gluesenkamp Perez directly, she went after the man supposedly running her old caucus.

"Voting for the rule is something that I, as Speaker, we never – we didn't even consider that anybody would do that," Pelosi said. "We never had that problem. So I'm disappointed that they did that."

Translation from a woman who ran that caucus with an iron fist for two decades: this never happens on my watch, and it just happened on yours.

Jeffries, for his part, tried to shift blame to Whip Katherine Clark, telling reporters to "take it up with" her when pressed on how the defection slipped through.

A leader whipping votes so loosely that a citizenship-and-elections resolution reaches the floor by accident, and then has to publicly blame his whip for it, is not a leader in control of much of anything.

Democrats are heading into the midterms with a caucus that cannot agree on socialism, cannot agree on voter ID, and now cannot agree on who is actually in charge.
