Chuck Schumer Made a Promise About Voter ID and His Party Just Answered for It

In March, Chuck Schumer made a shocking claim about Democrats’ position on voter ID.

His caucus just got the chance to prove it.

What happened on the Senate floor showed just how out of touch Schumer is.

The Vote That Exposed Forty Six Senators At Once

The Senate held a cloture vote early Saturday morning, August 9, in the final marathon session before the August recess.

The bill, S. 5271, would have amended the Help America Vote Act to require photo identification for voting, including mail ballots.

It needed 60 votes to move forward.

It got 52.

Every single yes vote came from a Republican.

Every single no vote came from a Democrat.

Not one member of Chuck Schumer's caucus crossed over, not even the ones from red states who are up for reelection.

Mitch McConnell was absent, but the outcome wasn't close enough for his vote to matter.

Ken Cuccinelli reacted to the vote in three words: not one Dem.

He tagged Heritage Action and called it sad, and it's hard to argue with him.

Their Own Voters Do Not Agree With Them

This is the part Democrats don't want their base thinking about too hard.

Pew Research found 83 percent of Americans support voter ID requirements, and that number includes 71 percent of Democrats.

Gallup found support even higher, at 84 percent.

Chuck Schumer himself said publicly this year that Democrats support voter ID.

Days later his entire caucus voted the opposite way.

It was a clean, no-frills vote that stripped away every excuse.

Senator Alex Padilla claimed the bill went further than existing state voter ID laws because of its mail-ballot requirements.

That's the same objection Democrats raise every single time.

This isn't new.

Democrats have killed election integrity bills in the Senate for years.

The objection changes.

The final vote never does.

Seventy one percent of your own voters want photo ID at the ballot box.

Vote no every single time anyway and you're not representing your voters anymore.

You're representing a party leadership that treats fraud prevention as a partisan attack.

John Thune and Eric Schmitt both called out the hypocrisy directly, and they're right to.

Forty six Democrats.

Zero exceptions.

That's not a policy disagreement.

That's getting caught.

Republicans will bring this bill back.

They should.

Eighty three percent of the country wants this policy.

It shouldn't die because Chuck Schumer's caucus is more afraid of its own activist wing than it is of its own voters.

Every Democrat on that roll call just handed the GOP a campaign ad for the midterms, and they wrote every word of it themselves.
