Indiana’s Lieutenant Governor Just Got Under Fever Coach Stephanie White’s Skin Over Her Response to the Cunningham Hit

DiJonai Carrington got ejected for a foul against Sophie Cunningham so violent the referees didn't even need to review it twice.

Stephanie White's answer about that foul didn't sit well with one of Indiana's top elected officials.

What Indiana's Lieutenant Governor is now demanding for the Fever has Stephanie White on notice and she did not take it well.

Micah Beckwith Demands the Fever Fire Stephanie White

Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith posted on X that the Fever "need to let Stephanie White go."

"No solid coach would ever take the side of the opposing team's player who committed a flagrant foul on one of your own players," Beckwith wrote. "Terrible coaching! The Fever need to defend their players."

Beckwith is a sitting statewide elected official calling out the Fever by name, not an anonymous fan account.

He didn't ask for an apology or a fine.

He asked for White's job.

The Postgame Answer That Set Beckwith Off

The Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 90 to 86 on Saturday, August 8.

Late in the first quarter, DiJonai Carrington caught Sophie Cunningham with a forearm across the face and neck as Cunningham drove in for a layup.

Officials reviewed the windup, the impact, and the follow-through, then ruled it a Flagrant 2 and ejected Carrington from the game.

Cunningham didn't whine about it afterward.

She called the contact "intentional" and said Carrington was "trying to get attention" with the Fever's national television spotlight on her.

Carrington's response wasn't an apology, it was a social media post reading "WHITE PRIVILEGE" tagging the Fever franchise directly.

Cunningham shut that down fast.

"This has nothing to do with race," she said. "Last year, I did the same thing and I got kicked out. And I deserved to be kicked out. There's no reason even to play that card."

So when Stephanie White stood in front of cameras after the game, Fever fans expected her to back her own player.

Instead, White downplayed the intent behind a foul her own league had just graded as flagrant.

"I don't think DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did," White said. "But it did happen, and I thought it was the right call."

Then she kept going, praising the woman who hit her player.

"One of the things about Nai is that she's going to play her butt off, man she's gonna compete," White said. "I don't oppose the hard foul, but I also don't think that she intentionally went for the neck."

That is the answer Beckwith saw before he picked up his phone.

Beckwith Is Right to Demand Accountability

Nobody asked White to litigate intent, the league had already ruled on the foul.

She used her podium time to build a character defense for Carrington instead of standing up for Cunningham.

That is not coaching, that is auditioning for a job with the other team.

Beckwith didn't need a press conference or a task force to see it, he watched the same clip everyone else did and said what Fever fans were already thinking.

Caitlin Clark has spent two seasons getting hammered on the court while WNBA officials looked the other way, and every time it happens the same excuses show up from people who are supposed to be in the Fever's corner.

Cunningham had the guts to call the "white privilege" excuse exactly what it was, a distraction from a player who got caught on video hitting someone in the neck.

Her own head coach didn't have that same courage.

But Micah Beckwith clearly just got under coach White's skin.
