John Thune Just Called it Curtains and Let The Election Security Window Close For Good

Republicans begged John Thune for months to secure this November's elections.

Tuesday came and went, and the legal window to clean voter rolls quietly expired.

Thune let it close, and Republicans can never get that time back.

The Deadline Nobody In The Senate Bothered To Meet

Federal law gives states a hard 90 day quiet period before any election.

During that window, states cannot run large scale programs to purge ineligible voters from their rolls.

For the November 3 midterms, that quiet period started this week.

That means Tuesday, August 4, was the last real day to finish the job.

Nothing happened.

The SAVE America Act, the bill written to force states to verify citizenship and clean up bloated voter rolls, is still sitting in the Senate.

It has passed the House three separate times.

Every single time, it has died in John Thune's Senate.

Thune Had The Votes Question Answered And Sat On It Anyway

This was never a mystery bill nobody understood.

Eighty three percent of Americans support voter ID, including millions of Democrats.

Trump made it his signature legislative promise.

Thune's answer was always the same excuse dressed up as strategy.

He kept telling reporters the votes just were not there, over and over, month after month.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin stepped in early to defend him, insisting there was no serious talk of removing him from leadership.

That defense came from a sitting cabinet secretary, not a rank and file backbencher, which tells you exactly how nervous Senate Republicans have gotten.

James Woods was not interested in defending anybody.

"Who owns you?" Woods asked Thune directly, accusing him of doing nothing for the country.

Republican Congressman Andy Ogles went further than either of them.

"Thune can either do the right thing or resign," Ogles said, torching his own party's leader in public.

Fifteen Republican senators were quietly polled on nuking the filibuster to pass the bill.

Fifteen said no.

That is not a rogue holdout or two – that is nearly a third of the entire Senate GOP conference choosing procedure over election security, with the clock running the whole time.

The Party That Begged To Kill The Filibuster Now Refuses To Touch It

Democrats spent all of 2022 trying to blow up the filibuster for their own voting bill.

Chuck Schumer forced the vote himself, and only Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema stood in the way.

Two Democrats refused to nuke a Senate rule for their party's priority, and Democrats never forgave them for it.

Republicans now hold the majority and the White House, and still cannot get fifteen of their own to do what Manchin and Sinema at least had the nerve to do in public.

Manchin and Sinema showed up and cast a vote everyone could see, with their names attached to it.

Thune's fifteen holdouts got polled quietly, with no names attached and no accountability to the voters who put them there.

Trump Kept Demanding It And Thune Kept Talking Around It

Trump has hammered Thune publicly for weeks, posting on Truth Social that the Senate should stay in session and terminate the filibuster rather than let Democrats keep blocking the bill.

Trump said Democrats "can't believe how lucky they got" with Thune running the Senate floor.

Thune left the SAVE Act off his own agenda for the Senate's last working week before recess anyway.

He told the White House to get on the phone and find the votes itself, as if that was not his job in the first place.

Every excuse bought him another week, and now the weeks have run out completely.

The Window Does Not Reopen Before November

The 90 day window that just slammed shut cannot be reopened before November.

Whatever happens in the midterms now happens on voter rolls nobody was required to clean.

John Thune had the votes in his own conference, the House product sitting on his desk, and a president publicly demanding action, and he ran out the clock instead.

Republicans wanted an election security bill.

They got an excuse with a gavel attached to it.
