A Top AOC Ally’s Family Partner Dumps Stakes as 2 Billion Dollar Courthouse Deal Implodes in Scandal

Now her husband's business partner used his own government post to help land a two-billion-dollar contract.

A lawsuit is forcing him out, and one watchdog says his exit proves something worse.

Barros Ran the Agency That Handed His Own Company the Contract

John Barros partners with Pressley's husband, Conan Harris, at CoJo Real Estate.

Their company sits inside Liberty Junction, the development group that just won a $2 billion, 40-year lease to rebuild Springfield's Roderick L. Ireland Courthouse.

Barros became interim director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority in January while his own courthouse bid was still pending.

Multiple MCCA board members also hold seats at the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, the very agency that picked Liberty Junction as the winner.

Barros was grading his own homework, and his own company came out on top.

Rejected bidders Jeb Balise and Dinesh Patel didn't buy the coincidence.

They sued to void the award, arguing Barros never properly disclosed his role to state ethics regulators before his company cashed in.

Under pressure this week, Barros announced he's divesting from the deal entirely.

His lawyer insists Barros did everything right and followed every rule on the books.

Balise and Patel see it differently.

"This selection was irrevocably tainted, and no retroactive exit can undo that," the pair said in a statement.

Liberty Junction's own team has described the old courthouse as a serious health hazard for years – the same pitch they used to sell taxpayers on a 40-year lease worth nearly $2 billion.

Forty years is a long time to be locked into a deal that started with a conflict of interest nobody wanted to admit.

This Is the Second Multimillion Dollar Deal for the Same Two Men

This isn't Harris and Barros' first taxpayer-funded windfall.

Back in 2024, Boston's Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu handed the pair a $250 million housing deal through their firm DREAM Development.

The Boston Planning and Development Agency pushed the project through over loud community objections.

"They basically step by step crammed this down the community who opposes it," one source familiar with the deal said.

The site was public land – former parking lots owned by the Boston Water and Sewer Commission – handed to Harris and Barros' team for private development.

Two deals, two Democrat-run agencies, and the same two well-connected men walking away richer both times.

Harris once served more than a decade in prison for drug trafficking before Boston City Hall turned him into a favored developer.

Barros ran the city's economic development office for seven years before cashing in as an investor alongside him.

Pressley has built a career lecturing corporations and contractors about transparency.

Her own household just profited from the exact kind of insider dealing she claims to fight.

Watchdogs Say the Damage Is Already Done

Barros can walk away from his ownership stake, but the contract stays exactly where it is.

Democrat Governor Maura Healey is standing by the deal anyway.

"The project that was chosen was the one that cost the taxpayers the least," Healey said, defending the very process her own state agency had a hand in awarding.

The Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance wants the Healey administration to "immediately pause this deal, release the relevant procurement records" before another dollar goes out the door.

Balise and Patel's lawsuit is still alive, and they're due in Hampden Superior Court on August 11.

If a judge agrees the process was tainted, the entire award could get thrown out and rebid from scratch.

That means more delay for a courthouse Hampden County badly needs, and more scrutiny for a Squad member's household that keeps landing government-blessed paydays.
