Trump Hijacks the Mic With a Single Unannounced Phone Call
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was on stage at the All-In Summit Monday when Trump rang his cell phone.
Huang didn't hang up.
He put the President of the United States on speakerphone for the whole room to hear.
Trump didn't waste the moment.
"The robots will not be taking over," Trump told the crowd through Huang's phone. "The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world."
He called the entire premise of an AI apocalypse "a hoax."
Trump said the fear-mongering plays "right in the hands of a lot of people that don't want to see it happen" – then named the suspects himself: "That could be political people. It could also be China."
He still tossed in one line of caution, saying America has "to be a little bit careful."
Then he pivoted to the number that actually matters to him.
"It's the oil of the next 20, 25 years," Trump said of AI. "It's bigger than the internet."
Amodei Wanted a Slowdown and Trump Publicly Ran Him Over
This call didn't happen in a vacuum.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had just published an essay demanding the industry slow down AI development over safety fears.
OpenAI and xAI executives had echoed similar alarm bells about the technology outrunning its guardrails.
Trump's response to the entire slowdown movement has been blunt: "Whoever wins AI wins."
This isn't a fight over Silicon Valley bragging rights.
Nvidia chips run the data centers already driving up the electric bills every American household pays.
The same chips sit inside the guided weapons and codebreaking systems keeping the country safe from Beijing.
Lose this race and America doesn't just lose market share, it loses the factories and the military edge that come with it.
He's treating the AI race exactly like he treated the space race and the nuclear race – something America does not get to lose while Beijing sprints ahead.
This is the same instinct that drove Trump to personally intervene for Nvidia before.
In December, Trump personally cleared Nvidia's advanced H200 chips for sale to China, reversing an export freeze that had Silicon Valley furious.
Even Beijing balked at first, sitting on the paperwork for weeks before its own customs agents let the chips through.
Jensen Huang didn't get a polite phone call.
He got a president willing to interrupt his schedule to publicly kill a media narrative before it could spread.
Trump Just Told Silicon Valley's Doom Wing to Sit Down
Amodei can write all the essays he wants.
Trump picked up a phone and erased the headline in thirty seconds.
That's the difference between an academic warning and a president who actually controls the microphone.
Every time a tech executive tries to talk America into slowing down, China keeps building.
Trump knows that whoever owns the chips owns the next two decades of global power, and he is not letting Nvidia get strangled by panic dressed up as caution.
Every retiree with a 401(k) tied to the stock market has skin in this game whether they realize it or not, because Nvidia alone has been propping up a huge share of those returns.
That’s obviously a huge problem.
Huang didn't need to defend himself on that stage Monday.
He just needed to hold the phone still and let Trump do it for him.
But words can’t put off the inevitable forever.
