The 2025 Little League World Series has kicked off in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
But this year’s tournament features some of the most inspiring comeback stories and against-all-odds victories in recent memory.
And these five Little League World Series underdogs shocked the baseball world with comebacks nobody saw coming.
South Carolina pulls off miracle comeback against defending champions
The biggest shock of the regional tournaments happened when Irmo Little League from South Carolina staged one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent Little League history.
Facing Lake Mary Little League from Florida – the defending 2024 champions – Irmo found themselves trailing 4-0 heading into the sixth and final inning.
Any other team might have started planning for next season.
The South Carolina kids weren’t ready to quit.
With two outs and their season on the line, Irmo managed to load the bases when Lake Mary’s starting pitcher reached his pitch limit after walking multiple batters.¹
Brady Westbrooks stepped to the plate in the clutch moment and delivered a game-winning hit that cleared the bases and gave South Carolina an improbable 5-4 victory.
Lake Mary had been undefeated at 3-0 in regional play and had outscored opponents 26-1 before the stunning defeat.
The victory sent Irmo to the Little League World Series as the Southeast Region champions, marking only the fourth time a South Carolina team has made it to Williamsport.
Irmo manager Dave Bogan admitted his team entered as underdogs despite their confidence, noting the pressure that came with local expectations for the historic run.²
The comeback shows why youth baseball matters – kids learn to battle through tough situations and keep fighting until the final out.

Venezuela fights through visa headaches to reach Williamsport
Most American teams worry about raising money for hotels and flights.
The Cardenales Little League team from Barquisimeto, Venezuela had to worry about whether the U.S. government would let them into the country.
The team nearly missed the entire tournament due to visa complications related to President Trump’s travel restrictions on Venezuelan nationals.
Venezuela is one of several countries whose citizens face restricted or limited travel to the United States under proclamations signed by the Trump administration.³
Just weeks before the tournament, a different Venezuelan team – the Cacique Mara from Maracaibo – was denied visas for the Senior League Baseball World Series, creating uncertainty about whether any Venezuelan teams would be allowed to compete.
But the Cardenales team secured crucial visa exemptions that required intervention from U.S. Senator David McCormick and a personal sign-off from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.⁴
The effort to get the Venezuelan team to Williamsport reportedly included assistance from Major League Baseball, which offered to help with the visa process.
When their visas finally got approved, the team posted on social media about heading to Pennsylvania.⁵
Getting Venezuelan kids to a baseball tournament shouldn’t be this complicated, but politics has a way of making everything harder than it needs to be.
Sports have a way of bringing out the best in young athletes, no matter where they come from.
Pennsylvania carries home-state hopes and recent softball success
Glenmoore Eagle Little League from Upper Uwchlan Township, Pennsylvania enters the tournament carrying the hopes of the entire home state.
Pennsylvania teams have been on a hot streak lately, with West Suburban Little League from Johnstown capturing the 2025 Little League Softball World Series championship.⁶
The softball team dominated their tournament, allowing just one run in the entire competition while defeating Floyds Knobs, Indiana for the championship.
Now the Glenmoore Eagles face the enormous pressure of ending Pennsylvania’s Little League World Series drought that stretches back to 1960.
The team benefits from playing at South Williamsport’s Lamade Stadium, where they won’t face the travel fatigue that affects teams from distant regions.
Home-field advantage could prove crucial as Pennsylvania attempts to capture its first Little League World Series championship in 65 years.
The Glenmoore Eagles represent the blue-collar values and work ethic that made Pennsylvania a cornerstone of American industrial might.

Czech Republic makes historic appearance for European baseball
The South Czech Republic Little League from Brno, Czechia is making a rare appearance representing the Europe-Africa Region in what marks a milestone for a country where baseball remains a niche sport.
Most Americans don’t realize that Little League has spread to more than 80 countries worldwide, including nations where baseball competes with soccer, hockey, and other traditional sports for young athletes.
Most Americans don’t know that Little League exists in over 80 countries, including places where kids grow up playing soccer and hockey instead of baseball.
Czech Republic isn’t exactly a baseball hotbed.⁸
Getting to Williamsport from Brno is already an achievement worth celebrating.
The Czech kids will probably lose early, but somebody has to be the first from their country to make it this far.
Nobody expects them to win it all, but showing up matters more than the final score.
Taiwan wants revenge after losing last year’s championship
Tung-Yuan Little League from Taipei carries serious baggage heading into this tournament.
Taiwan won 17 Little League World Series titles, but none since 1996.⁹
Last year’s championship game loss to Lake Mary stings even more when you remember how dominant Taiwan used to be.
The 2024 defeat gives Taiwan extra motivation heading into this year’s tournament.
Taiwan teams don’t mess around – they’re disciplined, fundamentally sound, and know how to perform when the pressure gets cranked up.
International bracket fans will be watching Taiwan closely after they came so close to winning it all last year.
The 2025 Little League World Series marks Taiwan’s fourth consecutive and 33rd appearance in tournament history.¹⁰
They’re on a quest to capture Taiwan’s first championship since 1996.
The team believes this could be one of the strongest Taiwan squads to compete in recent years, with better offensive capabilities than last year’s championship runner-up team.
Hawaii brings island baseball tradition to Pennsylvania
Honolulu Little League is back in Williamsport for the third time in seven years, representing the West Region with the weight of Hawaii’s impressive Little League legacy.
Hawaii won championships in 2018 and 2022, so expectations run high whenever they show up in Williamsport.
Maintaining that level of success gets tougher every year, especially when any team can catch fire and knock you out.
Flying from Hawaii to Pennsylvania isn’t easy, but Hawaiian teams have figured out how to handle the logistics over the years.
Little League reaches every corner of America, and Hawaiian communities take their baseball seriously.
Hawaii enters as one of the U.S. bracket favorites, with island fans expecting another championship run.
This year’s tournament has everything – last-second comebacks, international politics, hometown pressure, and championship revenge plots.
Competition teaches kids lessons they can’t learn anywhere else, whether they’re battling back from a 4-0 deficit in South Carolina or fighting visa battles in Venezuela.
