New details about ISIS-inspired terror plot targeting Taylor Swift concert
Organizers canceled a three-night run of concerts for Swift in Vienna after authorities arrested two teenage suspects who allegedly planned to carry out an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack at the shows.
“Austrian officials said the main suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian man, was inspired by the Islamic State group. He allegedly planned to attack outside the stadium, where upwards of 30,000 fans were expected to gather, with knives or homemade explosives. Another 65,000 fans were likely to be inside the venue. Investigators discovered chemical substances and technical devices during a raid of the suspect’s home,” the Associated Press reports.
CIA Deputy Director David Cohen went into more detail about the plot at the Intelligence and National Security Summit in Maryland, describing how the two teenagers planned to kill thousands.
“They were plotting to kill a huge number – tens of thousands of people at this concert, including I am sure many Americans – and were quite advanced in this,” Cohen stated.
“The Austrians were able to make those arrests because the agency and our partners in the intelligence community provided them information about what this ISIS-connected group was planning to do,” Cohen added.
Taylor Swift speaks
Swift addressed the thwarted attack in a post on Instagram following her run of shows in London.
“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating,” Swift wrote.
Swift admitted the news that terrorists planned to murder her fans made her both afraid and sorry that anyone who planned their summer around a trip to see her concert had their hopes ruined.
“The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” Swift added.
Swift said she was hesitant to speak out for fear of inspiring copycats.
“Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” she wrote.
The suspects
Breitbart reported that police arrested “19-year-old ‘Beran A.,’ his full identity strictly protected in line with Austrian law on anonymity before conviction, was revealed at a government press conference on Thursday. He was born in Ternitz, Austria but is of Macedonian heritage. Beran was said to have recently quit his job stating he had ‘big plans’, and recently adopted a new name of ‘Mo’ — Mohammed — while changing his appearance to take on a more stereotypically Islamist mien.”
Authorities also arrested a 17-year-old of Turkish-Croatian heritage.
