The Democrat Party establishment wasted no time in uniting around Kamala Harris as the Party’s presumptive nominee.
But not everyone was happy to fall in line.
And one surprising group opposed Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden.
Black Lives Matter opposes rigged process to make Harris the nominee
One group spoke out against the rush to crown Harris as the heiress apparent.
And it was Black Lives Matter.
The leftist group released a statement demanding the Democratic National Committee (DNC) create a “snap primary” to allow voters to have a say in picking the Party’s nominee.
“Black Lives Matter demands that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) immediately host an informal, virtual snap primary across the country prior to the DNC convention in August,” the group’s statement read.
Black Lives Matter pointed out that Party bosses and billionaire donors essentially hijacked the nominating process by foisting their preferred candidate on the Party.
“We call for the Rules Committee to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates. The current political landscape is unprecedented, with President Biden stepping aside in a manner never seen before. This moment calls for decisive action to protect the integrity of our democracy and the voices of Black voters,” the statement added.
“Now, Democratic Party elites and billionaire donors are attempting to manipulate Black voters by anointing Kamala Harris and an unknown vice president as the new Democratic ticket without a primary vote by the public,” the statement continued.
Democrats hypocrisy on democracy
Black Lives Matter argued that Democrats rigged the process to nominate Joe Biden in the first place.
The Party changed the nominating calendar, refused to hold debates, and in some cases essentially canceled primaries to make sure Biden didn’t face any opposition.
Black Lives Matter argued it was hypocritical for Democrats to claim they were the party of defending democracy when on two different occasions (at minimum) they denied voters a real opportunity to choose their party’s nominee for President.
“For the past few years, the Democratic Party has proclaimed that ‘democracy is on the ballot’ in an effort to persuade Black voters to participate in the upcoming general election,” Black Lives Matter’s statement read.
“However, democracy isn’t just an ideal to be protected against Republicans; it must also be safeguarded from erosions within the Democratic Party,” Black Lives Matter argued.
Black Lives Matter told national Democrats that calls for unity would ring hollow if voters saw that the Party’s message about democracy was born out of partisan convenience.
“Calls for ‘unity’ cannot come at the expense of democracy. The Democratic party, which has been the loudest in defending democracy, is now poised to commit some of the most undemocratic maneuvering to avoid listening to the will of the voters,” the group remarked.
Democrats are pulling every level at their disposal to squelch any opposition to Harris.
But this statement shows there is still an undercurrent of discord in some quarters of the Left.
