Barack Obama told an Ohio rally crowd that Trump's renovated White House looks like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.
He revived the same joke at a Georgia rally while asking voters to reelect Jon Ossoff.
Then Obama accidentally revealed what his old administration actually treated as the real crisis.
Obama Kept the Joke Alive at Jon Ossoff's Georgia Rally
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had already fired back once.
He told reporters the renovated East Wing looked less like a chain restaurant and more like "Darth Vader's tomb."
Trump shrugged off the dig, saying he "doesn't notice dirt and filth" and that the old White House walls "hadn't been cleaned for years."
Then he hit back harder two nights later at a rally in Mississippi.
Trump mocked Obama for trashing "a very successful company," adding, "He doesn't like successful companies."
Obama should have let it die there.
Instead he flew to Georgia on October 28 to campaign for Senator Jon Ossoff's reelection and Keisha Lance Bottoms' run for governor.
And then he had the nerve to talk about the high healthcare premiums Obamacare has wrought.
“We've got to make sure that nobody has to worry about high healthcare premiums,” Obama ludicrously declared.
Ossoff isn't coasting to a second term, either.
He's facing former Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley, a Republican who jumped into the race last year and needs Georgia voters to see Ossoff as part of the same tired Democratic act Obama just put on display.
CNN's Kaitlan Collins posted the clip.
In it, Obama told the crowd his old White House "mobilized a whole of government response" to the joke.
Then he said the part that mattered.
Not to inflation, Obama said. To that joke.
He seemed to catch himself, because he pivoted fast, telling the crowd he's a father of two daughters and that Chuck E. Cheese and the Cheesecake Factory "was my jam for about a decade."
It read like an attempt to walk back the same elitist instinct that gave America "the deplorables."
Presidents Have Renovated the White House for Generations
Renovating the White House is not new, and Obama knows it.
Harry Truman gutted the entire residence between 1948 and 1952 at a cost of $5.7 million after engineers warned the building could collapse.
Franklin Roosevelt's East Wing project drew fire from congressional Republicans in 1942, who called the wartime spending wasteful.
Obama himself tore out a White House tennis court in 2009 and poured a full basketball court in its place.
Nobody wrote a column comparing that to a dictator's compound.
The standard only shows up when Trump picks up a hammer.
There's another detail Obama skipped.
Trump's ballroom is being paid for with roughly $300 million in private donations, not taxpayer money, and Trump says the project is on budget and ahead of schedule.
Truman's $5.7 million gut job ran on federal funds because Congress was afraid the building would fall down.
Trump's version runs on donor checks because rich Americans wanted to write one.
Obama never mentioned that part either.
Consumer prices spiked 9.1% at their peak under Joe Biden in June 2022, the worst inflation reading in forty years, and Georgia families felt it at the pump and the checkout line.
Egg prices climbed roughly 49% and gas climbed roughly 48% over the course of the Biden administration, according to Republican National Committee figures, while overall grocery bills rose more than 21%.
Obama stood in front of those same families at that rally and workshopped a punchline about a restaurant chain instead of explaining what his party would do differently this time.
That's the tell.
Democrats keep telling voters they're the party of the middle class, and their most recognizable spokesman just spent a swing-state rally re-litigating a restaurant joke instead.
Nobody in that crowd seemed to blink at an admission that says more about Democratic priorities than any speechwriter intended.
