Mike Lee Just Put the CIA’s Spokeswoman in Her Place With One Message She Was Not Expecting to Hear

May 16, 2026

The CIA tried to tell the United States Senate it doesn't get to ask questions about Fauci.

Mike Lee told the agency’s spokeswoman exactly where to put that.

Now everyone watching knows why the agency fought so hard to keep this hearing from happening.

What the CIA Tried to Stop

CIA spokeswoman Liz Lyons called the Senate subpoena "bad faith" and the hearing "dishonest political theater masquerading as a congressional hearing."

Lee fired back the same night: "With all due respect, no federal agency – not even the CIA – gets to tell the Senate what questions it may ask in a duly convened legislative hearing."

He demanded the CIA Director appear publicly to answer for what came out Wednesday.

Because what came out Wednesday was devastating.

James Erdman III – a 20-year CIA veteran who spent the last year leading the Director of National Intelligence's investigation into COVID origins – testified under oath before Rand Paul's Senate Homeland Security Committee.

He didn't speculate. He testified to what he saw firsthand.

What Erdman Said Under Oath

CIA scientific analysts concluded as early as 2020 that a Wuhan lab leak was the most likely origin of the virus.

The internal vote among subject matter experts was 5 to 1 in favor of lab leak.

By August 12, 2021, the agency was actively preparing a public announcement declaring the origin a lab leak.

Five days later – August 17 – that position was quietly reversed with no explanation.

"Intelligence community leaders and senior analysts downplayed the possibility that the COVID pandemic originated as a result of a lab incident," Erdman testified. "Intentional or not, the IC's actions resulted in a cover-up, wasted resources, and a failure to properly inform policymakers."

"Dr. Fauci's role in the cover-up was intentional."

Not a failure of communication. Not bureaucratic drift. Intentional.

Fauci inserted himself into the intelligence process in February 2020 and again in June 2021 – steering analysts toward a handpicked circle of outside experts who had already publicly dismissed the lab leak theory and were, in some cases, funded by his own agency.

One scientist changed his position from lab leak on a private February 2020 call to natural origin in public – and received a $9 million NIAID grant shortly after.

Two thousand classified documents tied to COVID origins remain unreleased, despite a 2023 law requiring their declassification.

The August Flip That Has No Explanation

The agency's complaint about Wednesday's hearing wasn't really about process.

Lyons argued Erdman had already testified privately and that a public subpoena was bad faith.

Paul answered that directly: "Closed-door testimony doesn't provide oversight. Public testimony provides oversight."

That's the whole game. The CIA doesn't mind senators hearing this in a private room. They mind the American people watching it happen.

An agency facing serious accusations about a cover-up doesn't get to pick which forum answers the questions. That's not how congressional oversight works. That's not how a republic works.

And calling a Senate subpoena bad faith – calling sworn testimony theater – only confirms what Erdman said under oath.

Not One Democrat Showed Up

Every Democratic senator skipped the hearing.

Sen. Ron Johnson put it plainly: "There's no curiosity on the other side about what's happening inside the deep state."

They spent five years turning Fauci into a folk hero. They put his face on merchandise. They called anyone who questioned him a conspiracy theorist. There is no version of Wednesday's testimony that helps them, so they didn't come.

The timing made it worse.

Erdman testified two days after the five-year statute of limitations on Fauci's perjury charges expired. On May 11, 2021, Fauci swore under oath that NIH had never funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The Government Accountability Office later confirmed it did. The window to charge him for lying about it closed Monday.

As Sen. Bernie Moreno put it, Fauci is sipping margaritas somewhere right now.

But Lee is right that this isn't over. Conspiracy-related charges remain on the table. Two thousand classified documents still need to come out. And the CIA Director now has a public demand from a sitting senator to appear and answer for all of it.

The American people lost a million lives, trillions of dollars, and years of their children's education. They watched family members die alone in empty hospitals.

The CIA doesn't get to call that theater and walk away.
