Kyle Busch’s Family Reveals What Killed the NASCAR Legend Three Days Before the Coca Cola 600 Start Time

May 24, 2026

Kyle Busch won two NASCAR Cup Series championships and 60 Cup races – one of the most decorated drivers in the sport's history.

Now his family is grieving, and the cause of his death is something none of his fans saw coming.

What the Busch family revealed just days before Coca-Cola 600 stopped the NASCAR world cold.

From a Sinus Cold to Sepsis in a Matter of Days

The story didn't start Thursday. It started weeks earlier, when Busch was heard on team radio asking to speak with a team doctor about a "sinus cold" he couldn't shake. He told reporters later, "I'm still not great. The cough was pretty substantial last week."

Nobody knew how bad it was getting.

On Wednesday – just one day before his death – Busch was at the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord, North Carolina, testing in a racing simulator and preparing for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600.

He collapsed.

A 911 call obtained by multiple outlets captured what happened next.

"I've got an individual that's shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he's going to pass out, and is producing a little bit of blood – coughing up some blood," the caller told dispatch around 5:30 p.m.

Busch was lying on the bathroom floor of the facility. He was still conscious.

"He is awake. He's on the bathroom floor right now."

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene – quietly, the caller asked them to approach with sirens off.

Busch was transported to a hospital in Charlotte.

By Thursday afternoon, he was gone.

The Family Statement That Said Everything

On Saturday morning, the Busch family released the cause of death.

"The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications," the statement read. "The family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time."

What began as a nagging cough turned into pneumonia.

The pneumonia spread deep into his lungs and triggered sepsis – his own body turning against itself in a matter of days.

It moved that fast. A cold. Then pneumonia. Then sepsis. Then gone.

Three days before the Coca-Cola 600, Kyle Busch was dead.

The Numbers Nobody Will Ever Match

Busch wasn't just good. He was the kind of driver who rewrote the record books while his competitors were still figuring out how to chase him, and the numbers prove it.

234 wins across NASCAR's three national series – the all-time record. Two Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019. 102 wins in what is now the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series – a record. 69 wins in the Craftsman Truck Series – also a record. Ninth all-time in Cup Series wins with 63 victories. He won a Cup race in 19 consecutive seasons, breaking a record held by Richard Petty for 46 years.

Just eight days before his death, Busch crossed the finish line first in a Truck Series race at Dover – still competitive, still dangerous, still winning.

NASCAR called him "a future Hall of Famer" and "a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation." His fellow driver Brad Keselowski – a rival who raced against him for two decades – was visibly shaken paying tribute. Formula 1 expressed its condolences. So did President Trump, who called Busch "a true talent who loved NASCAR and its fans" and offered prayers for his wife Samantha and their two children.

Two Days Before He Died, He Told His Son He Was Proud of Him

On Tuesday, Busch posted what would be his final Instagram message.

His son Brexton had turned 11. Busch shared a family photo, wished him a happy birthday, and told the world his kid was the best – on and off the track.

He was a racing champion and a father who loved his kid.

That's who NASCAR lost on Thursday.

The Coca-Cola 600 runs this weekend at Charlotte – the same track where Kyle Busch made his NASCAR debut more than two decades ago, finishing second in his first-ever start.

He was supposed to be in that race. He never made it to Sunday.
