Arch Manning got some bad news after Ohio State that his famous family will hate

Sep 7, 2025

The media spent two years building up Arch Manning like he was the second coming of Johnny Unitas.

Every sports show and website treated the Texas quarterback like a guaranteed NFL superstar before he’d even started a single college game.

But Arch Manning got some bad news after Ohio State that his famous family will hate.

The reality check nobody wanted to hear

Manning finally got his shot as Texas’ starting quarterback after two years of waiting in the wings behind Quinn Ewers.

The stage was set for his big moment – a primetime showdown against Ohio State with scouts from more than a dozen NFL teams watching from the stands.

Instead of the fireworks everyone expected, Manning delivered a performance that had one scout reaching for the antacids.

"Honestly, it was a little hard to watch," the unnamed scout told Fox Sports after Manning’s 170-yard, one touchdown, one interception showing in Texas’ 14-7 loss.¹

The scout didn’t mince words about what went wrong.

"He’s just been hyped up so much. Almost no matter what he did, he couldn’t have met those expectations. But I will admit that I thought he’d be better than he was," the evaluator added.

The Manning name carries weight – and pressure

Look, nobody’s rooting against the kid.

Arch Manning carries one of the most famous names in football history as the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning and grandson of Saints legend Archie Manning.

But that famous last name became a burden instead of a blessing when the media machine decided to anoint him as the next great quarterback before he’d proven anything on the field.

The hype reached ridiculous levels as the 2025 season approached.

Draft experts were already penciling him in as a potential No. 1 pick based mostly on his bloodline and high school highlights.

Manning himself seemed to understand the weight of expectations after the Ohio State game.

"I’ve got to play better," he admitted on Monday.²

The scout community delivers mixed reviews

Other talent evaluators tried to put Manning’s performance in perspective.

One scout pointed to Ohio State’s "very good" defensive backfield talent as a mitigating factor.

Several others took the diplomatic approach, calling it "too early in the process" to make definitive judgments.

But former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly offered the most detailed breakdown of Manning’s showing in Columbus.

"He’s showed improvement in several key areas. He’s gotten better at seeing the whole field. He’s better at going through his progressions and delivering more accurately on his 2nd and 3rd reads. And he’s A LOT better at feeling pressure," Kelly wrote on X.³

Kelly noted that Manning showed mobility and pocket awareness against the Buckeyes’ pass rush.

"I noticed several plays against Ohio State he was able to get out of danger and either pick up yardage with his legs or he was able to sidestep pressure while keeping his eyes downfield," Kelly explained.

What this really means for Manning’s future

Here’s the thing about NFL scouting – these guys don’t care about your last name when they’re evaluating tape.

They’re looking at arm strength, decision-making under pressure, accuracy, and leadership qualities.

Manning’s debut showed flashes of potential, but it also exposed the gap between media hype and on-field reality.

The scouts who traveled to Columbus weren’t there to watch a Manning family reunion – they came to see if this quarterback could help their team win football games.

One mediocre performance doesn’t doom Manning’s NFL prospects, but it does reset expectations to a more realistic level.

The pressure will only intensify as Texas faces tougher Big 12 competition throughout the season.

Manning gets another chance to prove himself when Texas hosts San Jose State on September 6.

For a quarterback carrying the weight of family legacy and media expectations, that can’t come soon enough.
