AOC Left Staffers Scrambling to Square her 2028 Rebrand Effort With the Police Record They Now Have to Hide

Aug 21, 2026

AOC is trying to brush off her image as leader of the radical “Squad” of Democrats she went to Congress with.

Her trying to explain it away as a different time or Woke One Point Zero gone crazy is the clearest signal she’s serious about 2028.

But her attempt to rebrand just left her own office in a sticky spot of trying to hide the truth from most of America.

The Radical Record AOC Wants You to Forget

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent 2019 and 2020 building the most radical brand in the House of Representatives.

She said flat out that defunding police means defunding police.

She backed the New Way Forward Act, a bill that would have wiped out criminal penalties for illegal border crossings.

She endorsed abolishing ICE outright.

She told an interviewer she thought the country should eliminate the Department of Homeland Security, and her exact words were "I think so, I think so."

She pushed prison abolition and decarceration as serious policy, not campus theory.

She even suggested marginalized communities have no choice but to riot.

That is not a stray tweet or a bad news cycle.

That is a public record, on video, in her own words, stretching back years.

Her Own Staff Would Not Answer the Question

Now that she is eyeing 2028, all of it is inconvenient.

Ocasio-Cortez told audiences this month that "woke one point oh was crazy," then pointed to New York City Councilman Chi Ossé's own explanation for why.

She is blaming the whole era on COVID lockdown fever, as if defunding the police was a symptom instead of a policy she wrote and defended for years.

Reporters asked her office point blank whether she still supports defunding police or decriminalizing border crossings.

Her office would not answer either question.

Trump was asked directly if she is running in 2028, and he did not hesitate.

"I think so," he said, before adding that every Democrat doing this same dance is "trying to disavow themselves."

He specifically called out her history backing sanctuary cities as the part she most wants buried.

Ocasio-Cortez has also fueled 2028 speculation by freezing her eggs, a decision observers have read as her clearing the decks for a run that could stretch years beyond a single term.

Why Young Voters Are Already Souring on Her

This is the part that should worry every Democrat banking on her as the future of the party.

A CNN and SSRS poll found only 28 percent of voters under 34 view her favorably.

Independents like her even less, at just 22 percent.

Her overall favorability sits at 26 percent, with 36 percent unfavorable.

Zohran Mamdani already outpolls her on overall favorability, despite running a city, not a country.

Prediction markets still have her passing Gavin Newsom for the 2028 Democratic nomination at eleven percent odds, which tells you how thin that entire field really is.

Rebranding years of radical positions as a COVID-era accident might work on cable news panels, but it will not survive a single Republican debate clip.

Picture what her platform actually would have delivered if she had gotten her way instead of just talking about it.

Fewer cops answering 911 calls in the same Bronx and Queens neighborhoods she claims to represent.

No ICE agency left standing to remove the men sanctuary states keep letting slip back onto the street.

Prison doors propped open for repeat offenders under the decarceration push she now pretends was somebody else's idea.

That is the country Ocasio-Cortez spent years building toward, not a slogan she simply outgrew.

Trump already handed the country the preview, and Ocasio-Cortez cannot un-ring that bell no matter how many times she calls her own past crazy.
