Nobody bought it then, and everybody still remembers it now.

Virginia's governor just relived a similar moment in front of another audience that didn't just boo her – they walked away while she was still talking.

A Rural Crowd That Remembers Everything She's Done

Gov. Abigail Spanberger showed up at the 90th Annual Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax this month.

It's a beloved Southwest Virginia tradition, the kind of event where a governor is supposed to get a friendly welcome.

Public safety chief Stanley Meador introduced her on the festival's final day.

The crowd didn't clap.

They booed, and a wave of attendees got up and headed for the exits while she was still speaking.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares summed up why in a single line: "Turns out when you break your campaign promise, attempt a Leftist power grab pushing an unconstitutional gerrymandering effort in order to silence rural Virginia voices, coupled with massive tax increases, it results in a frosty reception."

Del. Wren Williams compared the moment directly to Clinton's 2016 hot sauce line, saying it was "about like Hillary Clinton and her hot sauce – nobody was buying it."

Virginia House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore was even more direct.

"When you try to take away their voice in Congress… folks are going to let you know," he said.

That's not vague grumbling from a few loud voices in the crowd.

Southwest Virginia voters showed up with specific grievances and made sure she heard them.

Spanberger pushed a redistricting plan that a court had to step in and block.

She's picked fights on gun policy in a region where hunting and firearms are a way of life, not a talking point.

Energy costs have climbed on her watch, and rural families feel that hit harder than anyone sitting in Richmond.

A Town She Cannot Afford to Lose Like This

Galax isn't a swing precinct that flips with the political wind.

It's the kind of town Spanberger needed to lose by less, not get booed off the stage.

She lost it decisively in her own election.

Instead of skipping the trip entirely, she showed up anyway.

The Damage Control Already Started

Democratic strategist Matt Royer tried to wave the moment off.

He told reporters her appearance was just part of her gubernatorial duties, nothing more.

That's the same instinct every Democrat reaches for after a moment like this – shrink it down, hope the video stops spreading.

It isn't stopping.

Spanberger hasn't offered her own explanation for what happened in Galax.

That silence is doing more damage than any statement could.

When a governor gets booed by the people she governs and says nothing, voters fill in the blank themselves.

Right now in rural Virginia, they're filling it in with redistricting, gun rights, and their power bills.

None of it is flattering heading into 2026.
