Nicki Minaj warned Gavin Newsom to tread lightly over what California is doing to children.
Ten months later, she carried that fight onto a Trump rally stage in Michigan.
What she told the Port Huron crowd about children is the line Michigan Democrats can't escape.
Minaj Took Over a Packed Port Huron Arena With Trump Watching
Trump saved Minaj for the closing stretch of a rally that ran close to two hours at McMorran Place on October 25.
She had flown in with him on Air Force One.
He introduced her as a special person and the Queen of Rap, and the crowd roared.
She opened by leading the crowd in a pro-Trump chant.
Then she went straight at the issue Democrats least want to talk about in Michigan.
"We don't want our children to be bombarded with sex changes," Minaj told the crowd.
That line didn't come from a Republican consultant.
It came from one of the best-selling female rappers of all time, standing next to the President of the United States.
She also made clear her support isn't a one-time favor.
She told Trump she would back him again if he ever ran again.
Trump played along like a man who knew exactly what he had on his hands.
"This woman overshadows me, and I'm angry about it," he joked.
Minaj Asked Michigan to Send Rogers and James to Lansing and Washington
Minaj didn't come to perform.
She came with a job to do – and she did it.
She urged the crowd to back Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers and gubernatorial candidate John James before the November 3 election.
Rogers, the former FBI agent who chaired the House Intelligence Committee, is running against Abdul El-Sayed.
El-Sayed is the Bernie Sanders and AOC-backed Democrat who wants a Senate seat Michigan Democrats have held for decades.
Chuck Schumer didn't even want him – Schumer backed Haley Stevens in the primary.
Kamala Harris has already campaigned at his side.
James, a West Point graduate and Army combat pilot, is facing Jocelyn Benson, the Democrat secretary of state who runs the state's elections.
Rogers told the crowd to drag every friend to the polls, even their liberal uncle.
James said Michigan voters are tired of excuses from the people in charge.
Minaj told Michiganders this election could change the direction of the whole country.
The timing matters.
Barack Obama rallied with El-Sayed in Detroit on October 24, one day before Minaj took the stage in Port Huron.
Democrats sent their biggest gun.
Republicans answered with Trump and a surprise guest who, he admitted, stole the show.
Minaj Has Been Walking Toward Trump Since the Nigeria Massacres
None of this came out of nowhere.
When Trump threatened Nigeria with consequences over the slaughter of Christians, Minaj publicly thanked him.
She later joined Ambassador Mike Waltz at a United Nations event on the persecution of Christians.
At AmericaFest in Phoenix in December 2025, she praised Trump in words no Democrat wanted to hear.
She said "he's given so many people hope that there's a chance to beat the bad guys."
She has even served as a celebrity judge for the Small Business Administration's Million Dollar Pitch Competition.
Now she's riding Air Force One and closing out a Trump rally in a must-win state.
That's not a fluke.
That's a pattern, and Democrats know exactly what it means.
Kanye West sat in the Oval Office in a MAGA hat in October 2018, and the media laughed it off as a sideshow.
Minaj isn't posing for a photo.
She's asking a swing state for votes, by name, for two Republican candidates.
She planted her flag on the issue that has cost Democrats parents in every swing state – what schools and doctors are doing to kids.
El-Sayed and Benson can run all the ads they want about Trump.
They can't run an ad that makes Nicki Minaj look like a right-wing extremist.
El-Sayed already has a Detroit problem.
Stevens outran him in Wayne County in the August primary, and he squeaked through statewide by less than a point.
Now young voters in Detroit who grew up on Minaj's music watched her tell them the Democrat Party has it wrong on their children.
That's the kind of crossover the Obama rally couldn't buy.
Michigan Democrats thought the celebrity lane belonged to them forever.
On October 25, the Queen of Rap took it back.
