Video From Mitch McConnell’s Return to the Senate Just Reignited America’s Fight Over Age Limits

Mitch McConnell froze twice on camera during press conferences back in 2023.

Now he's back in the Senate for the first time in three months.

The video of his return just blew up a term limits fight most senators wanted buried.

The Clip Everyone Is Talking About

The Daily Caller posted a short video Monday of the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican leaving his Washington home in a wheelchair and getting into a car headed for the Capitol.

There is no audio of McConnell in the clip itself, just the caption underneath it doing all the talking: "Many are calling for term limits… Wonder why?"

McConnell had been out since he took a bad fall in June, an absence that led to hospitalization and months of physical therapy.

His office released a separate written statement the same day marking his return, and it did not sugarcoat the recovery.

"My recovery has been a long and often frustrating process, and the lingering effects of childhood polio haven't made it any easier," the statement said, adding: "I'm still not quite back to 100%."

In that same written statement, McConnell said he had assured Senate Majority Leader John Thune that, as he continues physical therapy, he would "do my best to be present for tough votes when our Conference needs me."

Why This Video Landed Differently Than the Last One

McConnell has been down this road before.

He froze mid-sentence at press conferences twice in 2023, and the Capitol physician cleared him both times, insisting the episodes were not strokes or seizures.

This time the reaction was bigger, because the numbers already say the public has run out of patience.

An NPR/PBS News/Marist poll from May found 83 percent of Americans support term limits for Congress, with 80 percent backing an age cap on candidates.

Self-identified Republicans back term limits at 89 percent, the highest of any group polled.

Six members of Congress have died in office during the current term alone.

McConnell already announced last year that he will not seek reelection in 2026, so he will not be on a ballot for voters to answer this question directly.

That does not make Monday's video less of a warning shot.

A Bipartisan Amendment With Nowhere Left to Go

A joint resolution to cap senators at two terms and House members at three currently sits with 115 House co-sponsors, and U.S. Term Limits says more than 130 lawmakers have signed its pledge or backed the amendment outright.

Every one of those signatures is still short of the two-thirds majority a constitutional amendment requires.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune sets the floor schedule, and a term limits amendment has never once been the vote he chose to schedule.

Neither did McConnell, for that matter, during the years he ran the same chamber.

Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear could not resist piling on, telling reporters, "I hope that he is one of the reasons that we get term limits. I'll tell you what, I'd even name the bill after him."

Whatever you think of Beshear turning McConnell's return into a punchline, he is reading the same poll everyone else is.

McConnell did not create the problem of an aging Congress by himself, and this piece is not about tearing down one 84-year-old man who showed up to do his job on doctor's orders.

It is about every Senate leader, Thune included, who keeps finding a reason not to bring that vote to the floor.

The video of McConnell getting into that car is not the story.

The floor vote that 89 percent of Republican voters want and still cannot get is.
