Chinese Government Records Just Surfaced About McConnell’s Wife and He Has Said Nothing

Eric Swalwell had a relationship with a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, and Washington let him keep his seat.

Now newly surfaced Chinese government records show a sitting cabinet secretary held Communist Party titles too.

Mitch McConnell has had days to explain his wife's Communist Party ties and he still has not said one word.

The Titles Chinese Records Say She Held While in the Cabinet

The Daily Caller's exclusive investigation cites Chinese government records placing Elaine Chao inside at least three organizations tied to the Chinese Communist Party's United Front Work Department while she held two different Cabinet posts.

From September 2012 through 2017, archived Chinese government webpages list Chao as an advisor and committee member of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese's Jiading branch, an organization tied to the United Front Work Department, which the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission describes as an intelligence and influence agency.

Chao was named honorary chairman of the China Overseas Friendship Association's Jiading branch in December 2008, while she was still serving as Labor Secretary.

She later returned to that same organization as an advisor from 2012 to 2017.

Wuhan's municipal government named her an international advisor starting in October 2009.

China expert Gordon Chang did not mince words.

"No American, no matter how high and mighty, should have any ties with the Communist Party's UFWD," Chang said. "This organization is dedicated to destroying our country."

Intelligence expert Ina Mitchell said COFA "advances CCP objectives through soft power by using relationship-building, cultural diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges rather than coercion."

Analysts describe that kind of activity as operating in "the grey zone between legitimate public diplomacy and covert political influence."

Chao is not a random appointee.

She ran the Department of Labor for eight years and the Department of Transportation for four, overseeing infrastructure, ports, and supply chains that matter to national security.

What Her 2017 Confirmation Hearing Never Mentioned

Senate confirmation hearings require nominees to disclose every position they have held in the prior decade.

Chao's January 2017 hearing for Transportation Secretary came directly after the years the Daily Caller says she spent as an advisor to two China based organizations.

None of it came up.

Chao's spokesperson, Patrick O'Connor, denies all of it.

"She has never held a position with a foreign government or acted on behalf of one," O'Connor said.

"The secretary is a proud American who has devoted most of her professional life to serving the American people," he added. "To question her patriotism is a double standard, at best, racist, at worst."

That denial does not explain the archived Chinese government webpages, the state media reports, or the photographs spanning 2010 to 2026 showing Chao alongside Communist Party and United Front officials.

Her father, James Chao, founder of the Foremost Group shipping company, held an advisory position with the Wuhan government at the same time she did, confirming it directly in a May 2010 state media interview.

Her late sister, Angela Chao, was later identified as COFA's national director in 2019.

This is not one relative with one unfortunate photo.

This is a family with a pattern, sitting one marriage away from the Senate's top Republican.

Why This Is the Third Time China Has Reached This Close to the Senate

Dianne Feinstein employed a staffer later unmasked as a Chinese intelligence asset for two decades before anyone in Washington noticed.

Eric Swalwell sat on the House Intelligence Committee while involved with Fang Fang, a woman U.S. intelligence officials have identified as a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, and documents declassified in August 2026 allege she was selling access to him the entire time.

Feinstein and Swalwell both kept their positions once their China ties became public.

Mitch McConnell has had days to answer one question, and his office has declined to comment.

Silence is not a defense.

It is a decision.

The Chinese Communist Party did not need to recruit a spy inside the United States Senate when it could simply wait for one to marry in.
