Democratic Socialists of America just surpassed Eugene Debs era membership to become the largest socialist group in American history.
Now fresh polling shows a majority of Gen Z would rather join that movement than defend free markets.
One DSA leader just got asked what the movement actually wants, and he didn't dodge it.
Gallup and CATO Numbers Show a Decade Long Leftward Slide
This isn't a one-poll panic.
CBS News and YouGov found only 9 percent of Americans under 30 hold a "very positive" view of capitalism, a number The Hill reported on August 21.
A CATO-backed survey found 53 percent of Gen Z now views socialism favorably, ahead of capitalism at 45 percent.
Pew Research has clocked the same drift for years, with 44 percent of adults aged 18 to 29 rating socialism positively against just 40 percent for capitalism.
Gallup first flagged this shift back in 2019, when it found socialism had become just as popular as capitalism among young adults for the first time in the poll's history.
That was seven years ago.
The kids who liked socialism in 2019 are now DSA organizers, city council candidates, and – in New York – the mayor.
Zohran Mamdani's socialist mayoral campaign didn't create this movement.
It rode a wave that has been building since Bernie Sanders first normalized the word "socialist" on a presidential debate stage in 2016.
DSA's Own Leaders Are Done Hiding the Endgame
Democratic Socialists of America announced on July 4 that it had crossed 120,000 dues-paying members, calling itself the largest socialist organization in United States history.
That beats the old Socialist Party of America under Eugene Debs, which peaked around 113,000 members in 1912.
It beats the Communist Party USA's high-water mark of roughly 75,000 members in 1947.
DSA had about 5,000 members a decade ago.
Bernie's 2016 run pushed that number to 80,000, and it has since doubled again in the past eighteen months alone, a surge the Daily Signal ties directly to Mamdani's rise.
David Jenkins, who sits on DSA's National Political Committee, told the truth plainly: "Our goal is communism."
Not higher minimum wages.
Not universal healthcare.
Communism.
Heritage Foundation's Michael Freund summed up exactly what that means for the country these young members are joining: "The DSA is not demanding different policies. It is demanding a different country."
Wall Street Got Bailed Out and Gen Z Got Stuck With the Bill
Gen Z didn't invent distrust in the system.
Washington handed Wall Street 700 billion dollars in 2008 when the same banks that caused the crash needed saving, according to the Government Accountability Office.
The Federal Reserve then spent the next decade and a half printing its way through two more crises.
Its balance sheet hit a record 8.96 trillion dollars by April 2022, more than ten times what it looked like before the 2008 crash.
Every one of those dollars was created or borrowed to save a system, and every one of them landed hardest on people too young to have voted on any of it.
The house price to income ratio has nearly doubled since 1980, climbing from 2.5 to 4.4 by 2023.
That's the real math behind why a 22 year old can't buy the house his grandfather bought on one paycheck.
Meanwhile the same Congress that writes the rules on bailouts still trades stocks on information regular Americans don't have.
Even this year's Stop Insider Trading Act passed the House full of the loopholes critics flagged before the vote.
Cato Institute economists have called Social Security exactly what it is: a legal Ponzi scheme where today's workers fund yesterday's promises.
Sixteen workers supported every retiree in 1950.
Today that ratio has collapsed to just over three to one.
None of that is capitalism.
It's socialism for the people who already won, sold to the country as the free market.
Gen Z Isn't Wrong About the Rigged Game, Just the Fix
Gen Z isn't wrong that the game feels rigged.
They're just being sold the wrong fix.
The DSA leader who already told us the goal is communism isn't offering Gen Z a way out.
He's offering them a different set of winners.
Communism never fixed a single rigged system in the twentieth century.
It just handed the rigging to different people, and the bread lines came with it.
The real fix Gen Z actually needs is ending the bailouts, auditing the Fed, and finally letting the free market they've never really been allowed to see do its job.
