Unearthed Video Caught Texas Senate Democrat Calling Bible Believing Texans the Christian Taliban

Biden handed Afghanistan back to the Taliban and every American watched it happen on television.

Now a Democrat running for Senate in Texas just borrowed that word and used it on you.

What he called Bible-believing Texans in a video that just surfaced will not help him in November.

The Seminary Student Calling Your Faith a Threat to Democracy

James Talarico is a Texas state representative currently enrolled in a Presbyterian seminary.

He describes himself as "a Christian who hates Christianity."

He believes God is nonbinary.

He has claimed that Muslims and Christians worship the same God, and that Muslims "love Jesus."

He is also a man studying to become a pastor.

And he is the Democrat Ken Paxton will face in November's U.S. Senate race.

The Lone Star Liberty PAC – a group backing Paxton – released the footage in June, showing Talarico in a panel discussion calling Texans who push for classroom Ten Commandments displays and Scripture taught as fact "the Christian Taliban."

The clip drew more than 22,000 views on social media in its first posting.

The Taliban are the radical Islamic militants who stoned women in soccer stadiums, banned girls from receiving any education, and harbored al-Qaeda while it planned the September 11th attacks on American soil.

Talarico sees no meaningful difference between them and the Texas parent who wants Moses' laws on a classroom wall.

He is not a newcomer stumbling through a first campaign.

Talarico has served in the Texas House since 2018, won a Democratic primary to earn his place on this ballot, and is now making this argument openly while running for one of the most consequential Senate seats in the country.

The "Christian Taliban" label is not a slip.

It is the deliberate positioning of a candidate who wants to represent 30 million Texans in the United States Senate while comparing the state's Christian majority to the people who blew up ancient statues of Buddha and beheaded aid workers on camera.

He is not writing a dissertation about Christian nationalism.

He is calling you – the voter who wants your child to know the Ten Commandments – the moral equivalent of the men who executed people in Kabul for listening to music.

Why Comparing Christians to the Taliban Has Never Won a Race in Texas

Joy Reid tried this exact move in 2021.

After the Taliban retook Kabul, Reid compared the American Christian right to the new Taliban government on live television.

Conservative leaders and Christian commentators unloaded on her from coast to coast.

She faced no consequences.

James Talarico does not have that option.

Texas is not cable news.

The state that handed Donald Trump a 13-point margin in 2024 is not going to elect a man to the U.S. Senate who compares the local Baptist congregation to militants who ban education and execute apostates.

The Taliban comment is not Talarico's only problem with Texas voters.

He also called the American flag a "complicated symbol" ahead of Independence Day – and said so publicly, not in a leaked private message.

The Paxton campaign turned that clip into an ad before the summer was over.

Paxton's team had already tagged him as a "fake moderate" – a candidate projecting one image on the stump while holding positions most Texans would reject if they heard them stated plainly.

The Taliban video just ended that debate.

Democrats made this same mistake at the national level for twenty years after September 11th, building academic careers and media platforms on the premise that evangelical Christians were a domestic Taliban in waiting.

The voters they were describing responded by electing George W. Bush twice and Donald Trump twice.

Texas alone handed Trump 40 Electoral College votes in 2024.

Karl Rove recently called Talarico's campaign competitive enough that an upset was conceivable.

Rove was talking about a man who went to seminary and said the right things about Jesus.

That was before Lone Star Liberty PAC posted this video.

Talarico is betting that Texas Christians are too embarrassed by the Taliban comparison to fight back hard in November.

That is a losing bet.
