The Washington Post broke the story first.

After a credible Iranian assassination threat surfaced during Trump's July 8 departure from Turkey, Secret Service and military officials moved him onto a smaller military aircraft.

The actual Air Force One flew out as a decoy – with press and staff still aboard the plane made to look like the target.

Reporters were left on the aircraft dressed up as the president's own plane.

Asked directly why that was safe for them but too dangerous for him, Trump answered it himself on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews.

"I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk because that would be the plane, I think, that they would be more likely to go for," Trump told reporters.

Read that again.

Trump's argument is that the real target carried the bigger risk, not the decoy.

The press wasn't sacrificed for his safety – they were on the plane he says was actually safer.

The Loudest Critic Made the Weakest Case

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker went on CNN and swung hard anyway, telling Erin Burnett: "He put people in harm's way to save himself. That's who Donald Trump is."

Pritzker called it "a bait and switch" and argued Trump could have simply warned reporters and staff before the swap.

That sounds tough until you think through what Pritzker is actually demanding.

Warning dozens of reporters and staffers mid-flight that their plane is now the decoy for a live assassination threat is not a security plan – it's a leak waiting to happen, on an aircraft with satellite phones and open microphones, while a hostile intelligence service is actively hunting for exactly that kind of confirmation.

Secret Service protocol exists precisely because the fewer people who know a security plan in real time, the harder it is for a hostile actor to exploit it.

Pritzker wants credit for demanding transparency in the middle of an active threat against a sitting president's life.

That's not oversight.

That's second-guessing professionals who had one job that night, and they did it.

Trump Says This Wasn't Even His Call

Trump made clear he wasn't the one steering this decision.

"I go by Secret Service. I go by the military. They said, 'Sir, we'd like you to do this.' I said, 'Whatever you want,'" he said.

Security professionals made the call.

The president deferred to them.

That's the chain of command working the way it's supposed to when a hostile foreign government threatens a sitting president's life.

What the Decoy Plane Story Actually Reveals

Iran wanted Trump dead in Turkey badly enough that his protective detail needed a second aircraft to pull off the move.

That's the real headline buried under a week of hand-wringing about who sat where.

Professionals with access to actual intelligence decided a full decoy operation was necessary.

That's not theater.

That's an operational response to a credible plot against the president's life.

Every time this story gets reduced to "who got left behind," it loses the actual point.

A hostile regime tried to kill an American president on foreign soil.

The people whose job is stopping that from happening did their job.
