Michigan Voter Rolls Are Hiding Dead Voters Jocelyn Benson Refuses to Remove Before Her Election

A dead Michigan man's ballot showed up forty-one years after his own funeral.

Jocelyn Benson controls the exact voter rolls that let it happen and blocked the federal effort to fix it.

Now Michigan is about to find out exactly why she fought so hard to keep those rolls untouched.

Dead Voters Are Still Casting Ballots Under Benson's Watch

Michigan conservative journalist Patty McMurray documented case after case of deceased residents still listed as active voters.

Some were marked as voting in person.

Others were marked as voting absentee, years after their deaths.

One man's file showed a ballot cast forty-one years after he died.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation identified roughly 27,000 dead registrations still sitting on Michigan's rolls and sued to force Benson to remove them.

The Sixth Circuit ruled that Benson's cleanup efforts were "reasonable" anyway and threw the case out.

The Foundation took it to the Supreme Court – and the justices refused to even hear it.

Michigan's government celebrated by issuing a press release calling itself "victorious."

Victorious over an effort to remove dead people from voter rolls.

Let that describe itself.

A Federal Court Just Blocked Washington From Checking Who's On the Rolls

The Trump Justice Department sued Michigan in September 2025, demanding the state's full voter registration data so investigators could verify who was actually still eligible to vote.

Benson's office handed over a redacted list instead, stripped of the birth dates and identifiers investigators needed to check anything.

She still called the request an "unconstitutional power grab."

A federal judge dismissed the Justice Department's case in February 2026, ruling that none of the federal voter-list laws on the books required Michigan to hand over the real data.

The Sixth Circuit agreed this June, voting 2-1 to keep Michigan's unredacted rolls sealed from federal investigators.

One judge in the majority wrote that the government was "invoking Title III for an inverse purpose – to ensure that some people have not voted."

Read that sentence again.

A federal appeals court just admitted Washington wanted to check for ineligible voters, and called that oversight the problem.

The Woman Policing Michigan's Ballots Will Be on Them As the Democrat Nominee

Benson is not a neutral referee in this fight.

She is the Democrat candidate for governor of Michigan in November.

Michigan GOP lawmakers noticed the obvious problem last November and asked the Justice Department to oversee the 2026 election directly, since the person certifying results is also running in it.

Benson called that request illegal too.

She is every bit the threat Abdul El-Sayed poses on the left flank of Michigan Democrats, just with far less national press attention, because a secretary of state blocking voter roll cleanup sounds bureaucratic instead of radical.

It is not bureaucratic.

It is a Democrat election official deciding who gets to check her own work before she appears on the ballot.

What Happens If Nobody Stops Her

This is not new behavior from Democrat-run states.

The Justice Department sued Virginia and five other states for stonewalling the exact same kind of voter roll request, warning officials there were engaged in "open defiance" of federal law.

Virginia eventually got dragged into compliance.

Michigan has not, because Benson found friendly courts at every level and a Supreme Court that would not touch the case.

Here's what fires me up about this: the National Voter Registration Act exists specifically so states cannot let dead people rot on the rolls for decades while officials shrug.

Michigan is proving the law only works if someone with actual power is willing to enforce it, and right now that someone lost in court.

If the Justice Department cannot force compliance before November, Michigan voters head into a governor's race where the woman certifying the results spent a year in court making sure nobody could verify who was still eligible to vote for her.

That is not an accident.

That is the whole strategy.
