Tom Fitton Exposed a TWA 800 Secret and Just Put It Right on Sean Duffy’s Desk

Jul 28, 2026

TWA Flight 800 exploded off Long Island in 1996 and killed all two hundred thirty people aboard.

Judicial Watch just dragged an FBI secret into daylight after the bureau buried it for three decades.

Tom Fitton just put those records right on Sean Duffy's desk.

A Cable Marked Immediate Sat Buried for Thirty Years

The FBI wrote the four page communication two days after the explosion.

The bureau marked it Immediate and sent it up the entire chain, from the Director's office to every field office in the country.

Judicial Watch obtained the cable this year through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The document sits inside case file 265A-NY-259028, opened in the earliest hours of the investigation.

The cable states plainly that "FBI headquarters is in receipt of faxes generated from Cairo claiming credit" for the destruction of the aircraft.

That sentence never reached the American public.

Not in 1996, not during the four year federal investigation that followed, not in any government report on the disaster.

The four page record does not name who sent the faxes or what organization they claimed to represent.

It also does not show whether investigators ever tracked the claim down or simply let it sit in a file cabinet.

Judicial Watch has now filed thirteen separate FOIA requests across eight federal agencies chasing the rest of the paper trail.

Tom Fitton says the timing was no accident.

Bill Clinton was in the middle of his reelection campaign when TWA 800 went down.

A foreign terror claim on a downed American airliner was the last story his administration wanted running through a campaign summer.

Hundreds of Witnesses Saw a Streak of Light and Washington Explained It Away

Investigators interviewed more than seven hundred eyewitnesses in the days after the crash.

A hundred eighty three of them described a streak of light rising from the surface toward the plane in the seconds before it exploded.

That is not a fringe number.

That is a wall of testimony from ordinary Americans standing on beaches and boats who watched the same thing happen in the same sky.

The CIA has no legal role in a domestic aviation crash investigation.

It got involved anyway, using a television animation to wave away hundreds of firsthand accounts.

Judicial Watch is now suing the CIA to find out why an intelligence agency ran a public relations campaign on a plane crash.

The government's official finding blamed a short circuit in the center fuel tank.

That short circuit was never located, never reproduced in testing, and never explained to the families who buried two hundred thirty Americans.

Only one Boeing 747 in the plane's entire history has ever gone down this way, and nobody ever pulled the rest of the fleet in for a closer look.

Investigators found chemical residue in the debris consistent with an explosive.

Officials chalked it up to a canine training run, a claim with no paperwork behind it and no clear link to where the residue actually showed up.

A group of retired investigators petitioned the NTSB to reopen the case years ago.

The NTSB said no, the same way it has said no every time anyone has asked.

Sean Duffy Can Finally Answer What Washington Never Would

This stopped being a plane crash story a long time ago.

It is a story about a government that decided what Americans were allowed to know thirty years ago and never once revisited that decision.

The FBI logged a foreign terror claim within forty eight hours and let grieving families believe the case was closed for good.

An accident closes a story. A confirmed act of terrorism does not.

Fitton went straight to the man who can reopen it, posting "@SecDuffy, please take a look. @NTSB" and tagging the sitting Transportation Secretary by name.

Sean Duffy runs the Department of Transportation, and his FAA works directly with the NTSB on aviation safety findings.

The NTSB is the same agency that closed the book on TWA 800 in 2000 without ever identifying the short circuit it blamed for 230 deaths.

None of that happened on Duffy's watch. He has been Transportation Secretary for about a year and a half of the thirty years this file has sat buried.

But the FBI cable, the eyewitnesses who watched that same streak of light rise off the water, and a CIA that inserted itself into a plane crash investigation for reasons nobody in Washington has ever explained are all sitting in front of him now.

The only thing still missing after thirty years is an answer.
