Jim Banks Became the Third Republican Demanding One Drastic Move to Save Trump’s Top Bill

Chuck Schumer branded Trump's election bill a modern day Jim Crow and buried it in the Senate again.

Now a third Senate Republican says he's done waiting and wants Washington to skip its summer break.

Banks Joins Lee and Scott in Refusing to Leave Washington

Senator Jim Banks of Indiana told Fox News this weekend that the Senate should cancel its August recess until the SAVE America Act passes.

Banks becomes the third Senate Republican to make that demand, joining Mike Lee of Utah and Rick Scott of Florida.

"We don't need a recess," Banks said. "Let's pass the SAVE America Act."

Banks said he's hearing the same four words everywhere he goes in Indiana, from the diner to the grocery store.

The bill would make new voters prove citizenship with a passport or birth certificate before they can register, and show a photo ID before they can vote.

States would also have to cross-check their voter lists against federal citizenship data and purge anyone who shouldn't be on them.

Every Senate Democrat has voted against it every time it's come to the floor.

Republicans have brushed off Schumer's attack as political theater and nothing more.

The House has now passed the SAVE America Act five separate times.

The Senate has never let it reach Trump's desk.

Filibuster Math Is the Real Fight Behind the Recess Threat

Republicans hold 53 Senate seats, seven short of the 60 needed to break a Democrat filibuster.

That math is exactly why Banks went further than just canceling the recess.

He told Fox News Republicans should scrap Senate tradition entirely and go nuclear on the filibuster to force the bill through.

Four Senate Republicans already killed one shot at the bill back in June, voting down a version tucked into a budget reconciliation package.

Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, Mitch McConnell and Susan Collins voted down that amendment, denying Trump the votes he needed.

Tillis has since claimed the bill would throw state election systems into chaos if it passes this close to the midterms.

That argument hasn't stopped Banks, Lee or Scott from pushing forward anyway.

Canceling a recess to force a vote isn't new for the Senate.

Lawmakers stayed in Washington past their break in 1994 to fight over healthcare, in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, and in 2018 when Mitch McConnell scrapped the recess himself to confirm Trump's own nominees.

Banks and his allies are betting the same playbook works again, only this time with the midterms bearing down on every Republican in the chamber.

Banks said he fears what happens on Election Day if the SAVE America Act still hasn't passed.

Some Republicans have pushed a different route around the same roadblock: forcing Democrats into a talking filibuster, where they'd have to stand on the floor and defend blocking the bill in public.

A recent poll found seventy one percent of Americans support the SAVE America Act outright.

Democrats are still betting they can block a wildly popular bill without ever explaining why on camera.

Four Republicans Handed Schumer a Win He Didn't Earn

Four Senate Republicans handed Trump the votes to secure this country's elections, and four Senate Republicans handed Schumer the win instead.

Murkowski, Tillis, McConnell and Collins didn't just vote no in June, they told every noncitizen on the voter rolls the rules stay exactly the way Democrats like them.

Banks, Lee and Scott are done playing along, and they're willing to burn their own vacation to prove it.

Nuking the filibuster isn't some radical new idea, the Senate has bent its own rules before whenever leadership actually wanted something done badly enough.

The only question left is whether Thune has the nerve to force this vote before Republicans hand Schumer another midterm gift.
