Trump’s Third Meeting With a Socialist Mayor Is Testing GOP Message Discipline

Zohran Mamdani took over as New York City's mayor promising a Democratic Socialist agenda for the whole city.

President Trump just sat down with the Big Apple’s top socialist for the third time in less than a year.

The friendly meeting is landing six weeks before the Midterms, right when Republicans need voters thinking about socialism as the enemy.

The Base Is Furious and It Has Every Right to Be

Trump sat down with Mamdani for the third time on September 21, this time at Gracie Mansion instead of the White House.

Trump said he wants Mamdani "to be a great mayor" and added he has "certainly got potential, got great potential."

Activist Laura Loomer did not soften her reaction at all, calling Mamdani "a full blown communist jihadist" and reporting that supporters were furious.

One Republican strategist called the timing "self-inflicted, off-message, not helpful," and a second described the moment as a president in a "fully self-indulgent period."

Republican strategist Doug Heye put the contradiction in one line: "You're trying to say, 'Here's how extreme they are,' and the president's saying, 'I love this guy.'"

That line lands hard because of who built the attack Trump just undercut, Ted Cruz has been calling the mayor "Comrade Mamdani" and Congressman Tom Emmer has been calling him "Mamdani the commie" at the same convention where Trump warned of a communist takeover.

New York Republican Party spokesman David Laska tried to wave off the meeting as dealmaking rather than approval, and even that explanation read like damage control.

They have a point worth taking seriously, not brushing aside: Trump warned Dallas Republicans just two weeks earlier that Democrats were facing a communist takeover, and now he is smiling next to one of the men fueling that exact argument.

Six weeks before an election Republicans built around branding Democrats as radicals, the last thing the campaign needs is a friendly photo with the most radical Democrat currently in office.

Trump's instinct to sit down with any mayor willing to cut a deal on New York's cost of living is not the problem, the problem is that his campaign advisors signed off on this exact photo op at this exact moment, and that is a fair complaint from people who have earned the right to make it.

Mamdani did not even meet Trump halfway, days after the meeting he told "Meet the Press" that he still believes Trump is a fascist, saying flatly, "That's something that I've said in the past. I say it today."

Trump gave him a friendly meeting and a compliment, and Mamdani gave Trump the same label he has been using since the campaign, which tells you exactly whose goodwill is actually being spent here.

Mamdani Is Turning City Hall Into a Test Case for Democratic Socialism

Mamdani was sworn in as mayor on January first and promised to govern "audaciously" as a democratic socialist.

One hundred days into his term he was still touting the same platform: free buses, city-run grocery stores, and rent freezes across huge swaths of the housing market.

He has openly called himself a democratic socialist since before he ever ran for mayor, so nobody can claim this is new information, which is exactly why the photo op stings.

Republicans built their midterm message around one core idea, that Democrats have gone further left than voters can stomach, and Mamdani is Exhibit A for that argument no matter how friendly one meeting looks.

A city with rent freezes, government-run grocery stores, and a mayor who wants free public buses is not a hypothetical, it is New York City in 2026, run by a man who never hid what he believes.

The base's anger and the case against Mamdani are the same argument, not two competing ones: Republicans do not need Trump to hate Mamdani personally, they need every candidate on the ballot this fall pointing at what socialism actually looks like once it controls a city budget instead of just a slogan.
