It’s been an offseason of turmoil for one of the biggest names in the National Football League.
Their ugly headlines are based on even uglier accusations.
And this NFL star’s sex scandal came to this shocking conclusion.
Judge dismisses sexual assault lawsuit against Dallas Cowboys quarterback
A judge in Texas dismissed a lawsuit brought by a woman named Victoria Shores alleging Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott sexually assaulted her in a strip club parking lot back in 2017 during Prescott’s rookie season with the Cowboys.
Shores sought $100 million in damages.
The judge also set a hearing for mid-September on sanctions against Shores.
Prescott maintained his innocence from day one and even filed a countersuit against Shores and her attorneys alleging they tried to extort him out of money.
“Recently, Mr. Prescott found himself the subject of an extortion plot. The Defendant and her legal team have threatened to go public with a completely fabricated story of sexual assault from nearly a decade ago and demanded that Mr. Prescott immediately pay $100 Million in exchange for her not pressing false charges with the authorities,” a statement from Prescott’s attorney, Levi McCathern, announcing the countersuit read.
McCathern celebrated the judge’s ruling as a complete and total exoneration for Prescott.
“Despite Ms. Shores and her legal team’s relentless efforts to extort money and damage Dak’s reputation. Justice has consistently prevailed and will continue to do so,” McCathern declared.
“These ploys distract from the trauma of legitimate sexual assault survivors and undermine the progress that our society has made in supporting them. We are proud that Dak stands up against this injustice and thankful Judge Tucker agrees,” McCathern added.
Attention moves to 2024
The lawsuit and the allegations threatened to derail negotiations on a new contract for Prescott as the four-year, $160 million deal he signed in 2021 is set to expire.
Other than being the President of the United States, there aren’t many jobs in America more scrutinized than quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.
Prescott’s tenure as Cowboys signal caller is a mixed bag that leaves the team at a crossroads.
Since he assumed the starting role in 2016, Dallas is 32 games over .500 in games that Prescott has started.
Prescott threw for nearly 30,000 yards and 202 touchdowns in that timeframe.
But the Cowboys have only won two playoff games in Prescott’s eight seasons and failed to advance to the NFC Championship Game at all.
Last year summed up Prescott’s tenure, as he had a near MVP season, throwing for 4,516 yards with 36 touchdowns, leading the Cowboys to a 12-5 record and NFC East Division title.
But the Green Bay Packers blew out the Cowboys 48 to 32 in a Wildcard Playoff game that wasn’t even as close as that score indicated.
Market value for a starting quarterback is now around $50 million a season and Prescott would be looking for a 5-year contract in the $280 million range.
Re-signing Prescott risks tying up the Cowboys’ salary cap for a quarterback who has yet to prove he can get a team over the hump.
But letting Prescott walk could leave the team in quarterback hell, as starting over with a rookie has its rewards, but it could leave the Cowboys in the endless cycle of changing out quarterbacks if they guess wrong on Prescott’s successor.
