A green fireball lit up the evening sky over New Zealand's North Island Sunday and burned for ten straight seconds.
Witnesses across two regions grabbed their phones – and astronomers with cameras already running had the whole thing on tape.
The element that turned it green has been locked inside that space rock since the solar system was born.
A Space Rock From 4.6 Billion Years Ago
The fireball appeared just before 7:45 PM local time over New Zealand's upper North Island.

Residents across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions – spanning the island's western and eastern coastlines – watched it travel west to east before it vanished over the Pacific.
It burned bright green the entire way.
The Tauranga Astronomical Society captured it on meteor cameras at Fergusson Park Observatory and through equipment at a member's private home.
David Greig, the society's president, explained what the footage had actually recorded.
The object was a meteoroid – a fragment from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, carrying material from the original formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago.
It entered Earth's atmosphere at roughly 90 kilometers altitude, traveling at approximately 17 kilometers per second.
As it decelerated, it heated the metals in its composition to the point of vaporization.
One of those metals is responsible for everything people saw stretching across the New Zealand sky.

Why the Fireball Glowed Green
Magnesium.
"The colour of a meteor comes down to the composition of the meteor, the metals in it," Greig told 1 News NZ. "Green tends to be magnesium."
As the space rock screamed through the upper atmosphere, its magnesium content vaporized and emitted the distinctive bright green that witnesses watched light up the sky above them.
The meteoroid slowed from 17 kilometers per second at entry to roughly 5 to 6 kilometers per second as it dropped through the atmosphere.
It burned up completely at around 30 kilometers altitude – roughly 19 miles above the Pacific Ocean.
No pieces reached the ground.
For a meteorite to survive to the surface, it needs to decelerate below 2 to 3 kilometers per second.
This one burned out too high.
The whole visible display lasted ten seconds and covered an estimated 170 kilometers of sky.
How Fast and How Old
17 kilometers per second works out to approximately 38,000 miles per hour.
At that speed, the ten-second burn that lit up two New Zealand regions covered the equivalent of driving from Los Angeles to San Diego – in the time it takes to read this sentence.
The space rock's journey began in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, where debris left over from the solar system's formation has been orbiting the sun for billions of years.
That debris occasionally crosses Earth's orbital path.
When it does, it hits the upper atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles per hour.
Most of it burns up exactly the way Sunday night's fireball did – spectacular from the ground and completely gone before it reaches the surface.
The fragment that lit up New Zealand had been traveling through space since before Earth's continents were in their current positions, before the first dinosaurs appeared, before complex life existed on this planet.
It took 4.6 billion years to get here.
It lasted ten seconds.
Ten Seconds of Light That Took 4.6 Billion Years to Arrive
The society's cameras were running at Fergusson Park Observatory specifically for moments like this.
They caught Sunday's fireball on multiple angles.
What the footage shows is a streak of green that goes from nothing to everywhere in the first second and then burns across the full visible sky before it disappears.
Ten seconds.
From a rock that formed 4.6 billion years ago, when the solar system was still settling into the shape it has today.
That rock orbited the sun for longer than Earth has existed.
It crossed into Earth's atmosphere Sunday evening, glowed green for ten seconds, and evaporated 19 miles above the Pacific.
Most things from 4.6 billion years ago don't announce themselves.
This one did.
