NFL pregame ceremonies are supposed to be flawless displays of American pride.
Sunday’s Jets-Steelers opener at MetLife Stadium had all the right ingredients for a perfect patriotic moment.
But one stadium worker found himself in the most awkward position imaginable right before the national anthem played.
Stadium worker becomes accidental part of flag ceremony
The New York Jets rolled out their massive American flag across the entire MetLife Stadium field as part of their season opener festivities.
The 100-yard-long Old Glory stretched from end zone to end zone in what should have been a breathtaking display of patriotism.
But as the enormous flag settled into place, fans noticed something unusual moving underneath it.
A stadium worker had somehow gotten caught on top of the flag just as it was being spread across the field.
The man found himself trapped in the middle of the massive Stars and Stripes with nowhere to go but forward.
Football fans in the stands couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
The worker had no choice but to slowly crawl across the flag toward the Pittsburgh Steelers’ sideline while thousands of spectators watched.
Players from both teams stood at attention preparing for the national anthem as the man made his awkward journey across the field.
Fans capture the star-spangled mishap on social media
Multiple angles of the incident quickly appeared on social media as fans recorded the unusual sight.
The worker moved carefully across the flag, clearly trying to be respectful of the American symbol despite his predicament.
He eventually made it to the edge where Steelers personnel helped pull him off the flag.
The man’s identity hasn’t been revealed, though he’s probably hoping it stays that way.
The whole episode lasted less than a minute, but it provided an unforgettable moment for everyone in attendance.
What does this really mean?
Look, anyone who’s ever worked a big event knows that Murphy’s Law is always lurking around the corner.
The poor guy was probably just doing his job helping to position the flag when the timing went sideways.
What’s actually impressive is how he handled it – he didn’t panic or try to tear through the flag, he just took his lumps and crawled to safety.
In a weird way, it shows the respect Americans have for the flag that even in an embarrassing situation like this, the worker was careful not to damage it.
The star-spangled snafu might have been an omen for the Jets, who ended up losing a heartbreaker to the Steelers 34-32.
But honestly, most fans will remember the flag incident longer than they’ll remember the final score.
It’s one of those perfectly American moments – a little embarrassing, totally unplanned, but handled with dignity.
And hey, at least the guy’s got a story that’ll last him the rest of his life.
