Donald Trump demands the return of the Panama Canal
The United States built the Panama Canal and operated it until Jimmy Carter turned it over as part of a 1977 agreement.
This canal served as a key shipping point which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Prior to the canal’s construction, commerce between the Eastern and Western hemispheres required a lengthy trip around South America.
Ronald Reagan famously declared, “When it comes to the Canal, we built it, we paid for it,” during his 1976 Presidential campaign.
Donald Trump revived that spirit in a post on Truth Social warning Panama that the United States would retake control of the canal after the country imposed higher shipping fees and began cozying up to Communist China.
“The United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood,” Trump posted.
“We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands! It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question. To the Officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly!” Trump added.
Kellyanne Conway was guest hosting on Fox News when she asked Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) about Trump’s stated position of the U.S. retaking ownership of the Panama Canal.
Blackburn wholeheartedly agreed with President-elect Trump and explained that the voters handed Trump a mandate to put America First in foreign affairs.
“Kellyanne, the American people have given President Trump a mandate. They are tired of our nation not putting Americans first. And we have seen the Biden administration have an America-last policy. So, when it comes to dealing with the Panama Canal and making certain that China is not being advantaged in this, and America disadvantaged, of course. Let’s put this issue on the table and talk about it,” Blackburn began.
Blackburn also supported Trump’s proposal to purchase Greenland because of its resources and strategic military bases the United States operates in that country which are vital in defending the United States from aggression by both Russia and Communist China.
“When you talk about securing our nation, that is where Greenland comes into the conversation, and being strategic and how we’re going to keep this nation safe. That is what Americans want to see,” Blackburn added.
Blackburn wrapped up by arguing that Republicans should support Donald Trump following the will of the voters as that would be critical to the party’s success in the 2026 Midterm elections.
“They want to see departments that are going to be run by people who are going to treat everyone by the same rule of law. And they’re going to have equal access, equal treatment, equal justice. So, President Trump has a mandate. It is going to be up to the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate, both in Republican control, to make certain that we take action, that we support President Trump, and that we get things done for the American people,” Blackburn concluded.
