For decades, Jeopardy! has been a TV institution.
But even Jeopardy! needs to adapt
And Jeopardy! is making one giant change that fans won’t believe.
Jeopardy! spin off coming to Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime – along with Netflix, YouTube TV, Apple+, and Disney+ – is one of the major streaming platforms.
The service is already home to major sports with Thursday night NFL and is rumored to have landed a piece of the next NBA TV rights deal.
Amazon’s live content strategy stretches beyond sports, however.
Game shows look to be a key cog in Amazon Prime’s plan to grow.
Amazon already announced that star Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will host a new show called Are you Smarter than a Celebrity? – a spin-off of the old Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader? show once hosted by Jeff Foxworthy.
The latest spin-off coming to Amazon Prime is Pop Culture Jeopardy!.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! will feature questions exclusively about music, sports, movies and entertainment.
“‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’ is its own cultural moment, marking the first time the iconic franchise will premiere exclusively on a streaming service,” the head of AVOD originals unscripted and targeted programming at Amazon MGM Studios Lauren Anderson stated.
“With a team-based approach and pop-culture focus, our global Prime Video customers will exclusively experience this innovative spin on Jeopardy! while testing their knowledge on topics that both define and transcend generations,” Anderson added.
The latest iteration of Jeopardy!
Previous Jeopardy! spin-offs included Rock n’ Roll Jeopardy! – which aired on VH1 between 1998 and 2001, and Jep! – a kid’s version of the show that Game Show Network televised from 1998 to 2000.
Jeopardy! debuted as a daytime game show in 1964.
The primetime version of the show that Americans now know and love debuted in 1984.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! will bring the franchise to streaming and to younger viewers who cut the cord and no longer have cable.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new Jeopardy! spinoff series,” president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television Suzanne Prete said in announcing the new spin-off.
“With Michael Davies at the helm, ‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’ is going to be a nail biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of ‘Jeopardy!’ combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind,” Prete said, high-lighting the involvement of Jeopardy!’ executive producer. “It’s going to be a must-watch for long-time viewers and new fans alike.”
There is no host announced for Pop Culture Jeopardy! as of yet.
That job will surely attract keen interest as the search to replace the iconic Alex Trebek after his passing proved to be more interesting than the actual televised contests, as for a time it appeared like then Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the frontrunner to win the job.
Whoever hosts this show will be the face of taking Jeopardy! into a new era of TV where streaming becomes the dominant form of how Americans consume content.
