Jamie Raskin Called Haley Stevens Loyal Hours Before She Endorsed a Republican

Nov 3, 2026

Jamie Raskin praised Liz Cheney for putting country over party.

Haley Stevens just did the same thing and Raskin lost his mind.

Raskin told America Stevens would stay loyal only hours before she walked out the door.

Haley Stevens Dumped Abdul El-Sayed and Endorsed Mike Rogers Instead

Rep. Haley Stevens fought DSA-backed Abdul El-Sayed through a bitter Michigan Senate primary, accusing him of refusing to disavow an ad she called antisemitic.

She told CNN just one week earlier that she would support the Democratic nominee in November.

Then, on the same day both candidates attended Black church services in Detroit, Stevens stood next to Republican Mike Rogers and told Michigan voters she was done.

"And he's right, and that's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today," Stevens said, referencing a claim that El-Sayed told her she no longer belonged in his campaign.

"I don't belong in Abdul's campaign," she said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who had endorsed Stevens over El-Sayed back in June as the safer bet, did not hold back.

"This is a despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens," Schumer said.

DNC Black Caucus Chair Virgie Rollins went after Stevens through the Michigan Democratic Party, saying simply, "Congresswoman Stevens has lost her way."

Raskin Said He Was Dumbfounded Hours After Promising She Would Stay Loyal

Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, went on Meet the Press that same Sunday and told Kristen Welker he had personally spoken with Stevens the night before.

He assured viewers she would vote a straight Democratic ticket and stand with her party on Election Day.

Hours later, Stevens stood next to Rogers at a Detroit church and did the opposite of what Raskin promised.

Raskin did not hide his reaction.

"I'm dumbfounded that Haley told me one thing last night and changed her mind today," he said.

He later told The New York Times he had been "blindsided."

A side-by-side comparison of Raskin's confident Sunday morning and his baffled Sunday afternoon, posted by Jorge Bonilla, spread across social media within hours.

Raskin Praised Liz Cheney for the Same Move He Now Calls a Betrayal

Raskin built a reputation as the Democrat most eager to praise Republicans who break ranks with their party.

He celebrated Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger as profiles in courage for putting country over party when they turned on Donald Trump.

Stevens followed Raskin's own standard for political courage, choosing conscience over her party's nominee the same way Cheney and Kinzinger chose conscience over Trump.

Democrats have punished this exact move before.

Senator Joe Lieberman endorsed Republican John McCain for president in 2008, two years after Connecticut Democrats rejected him in a primary, and Senate Democrats only let him keep his Homeland Security Committee chairmanship after a tense closed-door fight over whether to punish him for it.

Michigan Democrats Are Now Eating Each Other Over Israel and Loyalty

Abdul El-Sayed says he isn't dwelling on the Stevens endorsement, telling reporters he is focused on what voters actually care about.

Michigan Democrats are not just losing a Senate seat.

They are watching their moderate wing and their socialist wing accuse each other of betrayal in the same week voters decide the race.

Stevens did not quietly sit out the race.

She stood at a podium next to the Republican nominee and told Michigan she would rather help elect Mike Rogers than stay silent about Abdul El-Sayed.

Schumer and the DNC can brand it a betrayal.

If Mike Rogers wins Michigan's Senate seat on Election Day, every Democrat in that state will know exactly whose vote put him there.
