Hakeem Jeffries Went Silent When Asked This One Question About His Indicted Colleague

Mar 27, 2026

Hakeem Jeffries spent months telling America that Democrats are the party of accountability.

Now one of his own members is sitting in an ethics trial accused of stealing $5 million in disaster relief money – and Jeffries won't say a word.

That silence tells you everything about what Democrats actually believe when the cameras aren't rolling.

The Scheme That Bought a Diamond Ring

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) is accused of one of the most brazen frauds ever committed by a sitting member of Congress.

Her family's health care company, Trinity Health Care Services, received a $5 million overpayment from a Florida state agency in 2021 under a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccine contract.

She didn't return it.

Instead, federal prosecutors allege she and her brother ran the cash through a chain of bank accounts specifically to obscure where it came from.

Within months, over $1.1 million had been routed into her congressional campaign.

She allegedly funneled more through friends and relatives – who then donated it back to her campaign as if it were their own money.

That's a straw donor scheme. It's a federal crime.

Meanwhile, prosecutors say she spent a portion of the stolen FEMA funds on a 3.14-carat yellow diamond ring – which she then wore in her official Congressional portrait.

She's also charged with falsifying tax returns, inflating business expenses and charitable contributions to slash her tax bill.

She faces 15 federal counts in total, including theft of government funds and money laundering, carrying up to 53 years in prison if convicted.

A Public Trial Democrats Can't Hide From

Thursday, the House Ethics Committee held a rare public hearing on her case – the first time the panel has gone public against a sitting member since 2010, when Rep. Charlie Rangel faced charges for tax violations.

The committee's investigators spent two years digging through more than 33,000 documents, issued 59 subpoenas, and interviewed 28 witnesses.

Their 242-page report found 27 counts of ethics violations and concluded there is "substantial evidence" she committed exactly what the federal indictment charges.

Cherfilus-McCormick's own attorney told the committee she cannot testify without potentially waiving her Fifth Amendment rights ahead of her federal criminal trial, set to begin April 20.

She asked repeatedly to delay or close the hearing.

The bipartisan subcommittee – four Republicans and four Democrats – said no, unanimously, every time.

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) is pushing to expel her from Congress outright and has said he'll force a floor vote the moment the Ethics Committee makes a formal recommendation.

"You're in a situation where you have a sitting member of Congress who's allegedly stolen over $5 million in taxpayer funds," Steube told reporters. "She should immediately resign instead of going through this process. But she's going to force us to do this."

Expulsion requires a two-thirds majority – meaning a significant number of Democrats would have to vote yes.

Jeffries Wrote the Book on Corruption – Until Now

Here's what makes this radioactive for Democrats.

Hakeem Jeffries has made corruption the centerpiece of his party's midterm strategy.

Democrats are hammering President Trump on fraud and self-dealing every single day, positioning themselves as the clean-hands alternative ahead of November.

Then a reporter asked Jeffries directly whether his anti-corruption message should also apply to his indicted colleague.

His response: "Next question?"

Earlier this year, Jeffries had declared himself a "hard no" on any expulsion vote.

His leadership team continues to hide behind "due process" – the same framework Democrats abandoned at warp speed when Republican George Santos faced far less documented allegations in 2023.

The overwhelming majority of House Democrats voted to expel Santos before he was ever convicted of anything.

Cherfilus-McCormick has a 242-page evidence report, 27 ethics counts, and 15 federal charges.

Jeffries says wait for the trial.

Some of his own members aren't buying it.

"How do you maintain your integrity and objectivity?" Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) demanded. "How do you maintain that credibility if you're going to treat Democrats better than Republicans?"

One House Democrat told Axios directly: if the Ethics panel finds her culpable, that member won't hesitate to call for resignation.

"People have an issue on all sides," a senior Democrat told Axios. "No one's comfortable."

The Party That Stole Disaster Money

Democrats want to talk about Trump's corruption every day between now and November.

They'd better hope voters don't ask about the Florida congresswoman who allegedly used COVID disaster relief money – funds meant to vaccinate your neighbors and protect communities – to buy herself a diamond ring and a seat in Congress.

Jeffries can dodge questions from reporters.

He can't dodge a verdict in a Miami federal courtroom on April 20 – and neither can his party.
