GOP Megadonor Timothy Mellon Closed His Checkbook on Senate Republicans After One Excuse From Thune

Donald Trump publicly demanded John Thune force a vote on the SAVE America Act.

One of his most loyal billionaire donors was watching every excuse Thune gave for the delay.

Now that donor has closed his checkbook on Senate Republicans and Thune cannot say nobody warned him.

Mellon Went From Two Hundred Million to Almost Nothing

Timothy Mellon is 84 years old.

He is the great-grandson of Andrew Mellon, one of the wealthiest men in American history, and across his last several election cycles, he has proven the money still works the same way.

In the 2024 cycle Mellon poured roughly $200 million into Republican campaigns and committees.

In 2020 he alone sent $30 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC built to protect the GOP majority.

This cycle his publicly disclosed giving to Senate Republicans has collapsed to roughly $3.1 million.

He still handed $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund to help House Republicans in August.

The Senate Leadership Fund, the committee that needs him most, got a fraction of what it used to.

When Senate Republicans came calling for another check, Mellon's answer was blunt – his pockets were closed.

RNC Chairman Joe Gruters tried to wave off the panic, telling reporters "bet on us" and insisting the party still has "better candidates."

That is not the sound of a party that isn't nervous.

Thune Blamed the Math While Trump Demanded the Nuclear Option

The SAVE America Act would require voter ID nationwide, demand proof of citizenship to register, and rein in the mail-in ballot chaos Democrats built during COVID.

The House passed it with every Republican vote and one Democrat, Henry Cuellar of Texas.

Then it hit the Senate, where Democrats filibustered it into a coma.

Trump did not accept that as the final word.

He publicly pressed Thune to fire the Senate parliamentarian and push the bill through reconciliation, bypassing the 60-vote wall entirely.

Thune refused.

His explanation was blunt: "The votes aren't there for a talking filibuster."

House conservatives were furious watching from the other side of the Capitol.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden put it plainly – "if we don't get this done, or at least show that we've got some backbone, we're done, the midterms are over."

Rep. Andrew Clyde tried to force the issue by tying the SAVE Act to a Homeland Security funding bill.

Speaker Mike Johnson kept backing away from a public fight with Senate leadership rather than risk the confrontation Trump's base wanted.

Thune had the votes to make Democrats own a filibuster of voter ID in an election year, and instead he let them hide behind a Senate rule he refused to touch.

Every Senate Republican Up in 2026 Should Be Terrified

Megadonors have used their checkbooks as leverage before, and Republicans who ignore that history do so at their peril.

The Koch network made its support for House Republicans in 2017 conditional on passing tax reform, proving the same lesson Mellon is teaching Thune now – money follows results, not promises.

Mellon is not walking away from Trump or from the SAVE America Act itself, he is walking away from a Senate majority leader who would rather cite a rulebook than win a fight.

That distinction matters, because it means the anger in Republican donor circles is aimed squarely at Capitol Hill's institutionalists, not at the president who has publicly and repeatedly pushed for the nuclear option Thune keeps refusing to pull.

Every Senate Republican defending a seat in 2026 just watched a man worth billions decide their campaign account was not worth funding.

If Thune cannot explain to men like Mellon why a rule matters more than voter ID becoming law, he is going to watch more checks stop arriving before he watches a single vote change.
