A suspected Chinese spy helped raise money for Eric Swalwell's 2014 campaign before the FBI stepped in.
Beijing has since taken a new tack to lure over potential traitors.

The Republican Who Fled China With 100 Dollars Wants Maggie Goodlander's Seat
Lily Tang Williams is the Republican nominee in New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District.
She is taking a second shot at Democrat Rep. Maggie Goodlander after losing the open-seat race in 2024.
Williams escaped Communist China after the Tiananmen Square massacre with about $100 to her name.
She became an American citizen in 1994.
She knows what a one-party state looks like from the inside, and she sees warning signs at home.
"I fear that the country I love is becoming the country I left," Williams told Fox News Digital.
She says Beijing wants to bring America down and would pounce on American weakness the moment Democrats take control of Congress.
"China will be very happy to see Democrats control the House and Senate," she told RedState.
DSA Members Bragged About Being Treated Like VIPs in China
The Times of London reported that the Chinese Communist Party organized trips for members of the Democratic Socialists of America.
One DSA member described the red-carpet treatment without a hint of embarrassment.
"The provincial foreign affairs department staff called us 'VIPs' and treated us royally," the member said, as quoted by Fox News.
According to the Times report, members came home pledging support for the Chinese Communist Party.
The Times tied those trips to DSA members who helped power Zohran Mamdani's campaign in New York City.
Williams points to more than a dozen high-ranking DSA members who made the trek.
She says the entire point was to produce favorable coverage of China and its regime.
This was no one-off vacation.
The Network Contagion Research Institute documented six DSA delegations to Venezuela, Cuba and China since 2021.
The group found that DSA followed those trips with coordinated messaging that advanced the priorities of the regimes that hosted them.
After a China trip, the DSA's International Committee hosted a late-2021 event branded "No Cold War" to oppose American pressure on Beijing.
Williams says the DSA has hijacked the Democrat Party and that moderate Democrats will end up serving in a DSA-run Congress whether they like it or not.
That is not a fringe fear.
Gallup found 43 percent of Americans now hold a positive view of socialism.
At least six DSA-affiliated candidates could be sworn into Congress in January.
Goodlander Won't Condemn Marxism or Zohran Mamdani
Maggie Goodlander is not some backbencher who wandered into this fight.
She is married to Jake Sullivan, Joe Biden's national security adviser.
When they first faced off in 2024, Williams hammered Goodlander as a wealthy Washington insider pretending to rent in Nashua while the couple owned a home in Portsmouth, outside the district.
She was one of six congressional Democrats who cut a November 2025 video telling American troops they could refuse illegal orders.
When asked, Goodlander would not condemn Marxism or New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, according to Williams.
Goodlander, the DSA and the Democrat Party all ignored Fox News Digital's request for comment.
Williams also warns that open-border policies make it easier for Chinese intelligence operatives to slip across the southern border.
She worries about lawmakers who sympathize with Marxism getting their hands on classified information.
An Arcadia Mayor Already Pleaded Guilty to Pushing Beijing's Propaganda
Anyone who thinks Williams is exaggerating should look at Arcadia, California.
Mayor Eileen Wang resigned and pleaded guilty in May 2026 to acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government.
Prosecutors said she shared prewritten, Beijing-friendly articles without notifying the federal government.
Then there is Christine Fang.
The suspected Chinese operative helped fundraise for Swalwell's 2014 reelection and helped place at least one intern in his office.
Federal investigators briefed Swalwell in 2015, and he cut ties with her.
Beijing does not need to win American elections when it can cozy up to the people who do.
A DSA Congress Is the Majority Beijing Is Rooting For
China does not need tanks on the Merrimack River when a VIP itinerary and a fawning delegation can do the work.
Williams grew up under the regime that rolled tanks into Tiananmen Square, and she recognizes a courtship when she sees one.
Goodlander, a Biden insider married to Biden's top national security man, cannot bring herself to condemn Marxism.
New Hampshire voters get to decide on November 3 which woman understands the threat.
