A Super Bowl-winning coach is about to make Chuck Schumer’s life a living hell

Jan 31, 2025

Chuck Schumer got some bad news.

Democrats thought they finally pulled themselves up off the mat following their defeat in November.

But now a Super Bowl-winning coach is about to make Chuck Schumer’s life a living hell.

Key Democrat Senator announces retirement

The Midterm election usually provides an opportunity for the opposition party to gain seats in Congress.

Their voters are motivated to turn out after seeing two years of the incumbent party implement an agenda they oppose.

The incumbent party’s voters aren’t as enthusiastic to turn out, as the compromises of government either leave the coalition dispirited or the fact that it’s the majority party means it depends on irregular voters, which leaves it vulnerable to a lower turnout Midterm.

That second variable weighs heavily on the 2026 Midterms.

Democrats are now the party of college-educated voters – who view it as their civic duty to vote – and dominate special elections and other low turnout affairs.

Donald Trump’s coalition is built on voters who turned out in record numbers for him, but not necessarily the establishment RINOs he shared the ballot with.

But all these calculations took a hit when Michigan Democrat Senator Gary Peters announced his retirement.

“After three terms in the House and two terms in the Senate, I believe now is time for me to write a few more paragraphs in my current chapter and then turn over the reins,” Peters announced. “I will therefore not seek reelection in 2026.”

Peters’ decision not to seek a third term spoke more broadly to the pessimistic nature on the Left of the Democrat Party regaining the Senate majority in either the 2026 or 2028 elections.

Gary Peters thought he was going to spend four more years in the minority and wants out.

Who will run to replace Gary Peters?

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced she wouldn’t run for Senate.

It was assumed she was running for President in 2028, and that just sealed it.

The biggest name Democrat to show interest in the race was Biden administration Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

“Pete is exploring all of his options on how he can be helpful and continue to serve,” a source familiar with Buttigieg’s thinking relayed to Axios. “He’s honored to be mentioned for this and he’s taking a serious look.”

Buttigieg offered high praise for Peters, a sure sign he was considering the race.

“Senator Gary Peters has served with great integrity, focus, and expertise. It was a pleasure working with him as Secretary to deliver good policies for our country and key transportation projects in Michigan,” Buttigieg posted on X.

Pete Buttigieg ran for President in 2020.

Buttigieg’s campaign never got off the ground after winning the Iowa caucus because he repelled black voters.

In South Carolina, Buttigieg won just three percent of the black vote before dropping out of the race.

As to who may run on the Republican side, Michigan native and Super Bowl and Hall of Fame-winning coach Tony Dungy is one of the rumored candidates.

“Asked a GOP source who are possibles to run for Peters seat. They mentioned four names: Bill Huizenga, John James, Mike Rogers and …… former Colts HC Tony Dungy,” The Hill’s Al Weaver reported.

Due to Michigan’s prominence in the Presidential election, political pros will be looking for 2028 clues in the race to replace Peters so this contest automatically shoots to the top as the marquee election next year.
