And now Elon Musk could have gotten Rachel Maddow fired in one head-turning move.
Musk floats buying MSNBC
Elon Musk buying Twitter in 2022 and firing all the censors may have been the moment Donald Trump won the 2024 election.
Musk allowing free speech online broke the media monopoly on information flow, which allowed the Trump campaign to reach the irregular voters the Trump campaign bet would swing the election their way.
MSNBC is now an embarrassment to Comcast – the parent company of NBC Universal, which includes NBC News.
After Trump’s win, Comcast honchos announced the plan to spin MSNBC and other channels off into a separate company to create a buffer between MSNBC and NBC News.
“Comcast announced Wednesday that it is moving forward with a plan to spin off its NBCUniversal cable TV networks, acknowledging that it will be better off without a business that was once its crown jewel. The company, which last month said it was studying the idea, will separate off entertainment and news channels including MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
This move led to speculation that MSNBC would have to change its name – since it was no longer part of NBC Universal – and that the channel would go up for sale.
That rumor gave Donald Trump Jr. an idea.
“Hey @elonmusk I have the funniest idea ever!!!” Trump Jr. posted on X.
“How much does it cost?” Musk wrote back.
A new MSNBC
Musk then began to entertain the idea of buying MSNBC.
“The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely,” Musk added.
Joe Rogan responded by saying if Musk bought MSNBC, that Musk could fire Rachel Maddow and Rogan could take her place.
“If you buy MSNBC I would like Rachel Maddow’s job. I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies,” Rogan added.
MSNBC is right now in utter turmoil.
Maddow reportedly took a $5 million a year pay cut due to the network’s struggles.
The Huffington Post reported that “Maddow, who has been with MSNBC since 2008, renegotiated her deal with the network and is set to make $25 million annually for the next five years, a $5 million per year pay cut.”
MSNBC is also bleeding viewers with ratings plunging nearly 40% since Donald Trump’s election win.
“The audience exodus from CNN and especially MSNBC since the election is staggering. CNN and MSNBC have seen totals decline by 27% and 38%, respectively. In 25-54 demo, CNN has averaged 70,000 while MSNBC has averaged 53,000,” Puck’s Dylan Byers posted on social media.
Elon Musk could likely buy MSNBC for spare parts if he so chose.
Left-wing cable news is a struggling business as Americans realize the legacy media continues to mislead them on the big stories.
MSNBC playing up Kamala Harris’ chances of winning may have been the final straw.
And if Elon Musk bought MSNBC and did for that network what he did for Twitter, it would constitute a massive sea change in the media.
