Donald Trump and Matt Gaetz geared up for a fight over Gaetz’s nomination to serve as Attorney General.
Then all hell broke loose.
That’s because Matt Gaetz had one phone call with Donald Trump that changed everything.
Trump nominated Matt Gaetz to serve as Attorney General because Trump wanted a proven fighter in the role.
The weaponized Justice Department was the hot bed of anti-Trump resistance over these last eight years, with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris weaponizing the department to see to it that Trump died in jail.
But from the second Trump named Gaetz as his Attorney General pick, establishment RINOs detested Gaetz because Gaetz led the successful effort to oust former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
Trump decided to pick Gaetz as his Attorney General nominee after coming away disappointed with his first set of options.
“Those other guys are stiffs,” the Bulwark’s Marc Caputo reported Trump said to Gaetz in a flight aboard Trump Force One to Florida.
That’s when Trump, Gaetz, Elon Musk and legal advisor Boris Epshteyn hatched the plan to nominate Gaetz.
Gaetz immediately knew there was a problem as establishment RINOs hated him for taking out their ally McCarthy.
“Mr. President,” Gaetz reportedly said, “I might not be confirmable. Those guys hate me.”
Eight days later, Gaetz withdrew his nomination.
Vice President-elect J.D Vance went to Capitol Hill with Gaetz to try and shore up support among Senate Republicans.
The pitch didn’t land.
24 hours later, Trump told Gaetz that he didn’t have the votes to win confirmation.
“You don’t have the votes,” Caputo reported Trump telling Gaetz. “These senators aren’t moving.”
Shortly thereafter, Gaetz wrote on social media that he was withdrawing his nomination.
Gaetz wrote that he didn’t want to become a distraction for Trump and that Trump deserved an Attorney General on day one.
“While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz posted on X. “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.”
Donald Trump didn’t wait long to pick a new Attorney General nominee, Pam Bondi, as his pick to run the Justice Department.
Bondi served two terms as Florida Attorney General.
In 2016, Bondi was the only Florida statewide official to endorse Trump over home state Senator Marco Rubio.
Bondi also developed a reputation as an immigration hawk.
And Bondi served on the team of lawyers that defended Trump in the impeachment hoax.
Bondi is a loyalist, and the Senate will confirm her quickly.
Those are two qualities that held broad appeal to Trump.
