Whoopi Goldberg is a never ending source of material for media critics.
Ever since The View turned into a political talk show, Goldberg and her co-hosts show off the worst examples of the liberal bias that drove trust in the media down to record low levels.
And Whoopi Goldberg committed this humiliating gaffe on live television.
Whoopi Goldberg botches American history
Every episode of The View is an exercise in “can you top this: hysterics about the fact that Donald Trump stands a strong chance of winning the election.”
The latest breakdown occurred over the latest Russia collusion conspiracy theory the media cooked up.
Journalist Bob Woodward claimed in his new book War that early on in the coronavirus pandemic, Donald Trump secretly shipped COVID tests to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Members of the media predictably went wild over this claim, none more so than the ladies of The View.
Actress Rosie Perez was a guest on the show, and she went off on a tangent about how Trump was coddling Putin and that it went against the Republican Party tradition of Ronald Reagan telling Mikhail Gorbachev “tear down this wall” at a speech in front of the Berlin Wall.
“Biden and Harris got us out of a pandemic. Our world was crumbling around us. What did Trump do on the pandemic? He sent COVID tests that we desperately needed over to our adversary, to Russia. What happened?” Perez shrieked.
“Even if you are a true Republican, don’t you remember? ‘Tear down this wall.’ Reagan was clear about who our enemy was, and still is,” Perez added.
Whoopi Goldberg’s fake fact check
Much like when ABC colleague David Muir incorrectly fact checked Donald Trump over crime rates in the debate with Kamala Harris, Whoopi Goldberg jumped in with an incorrect fact check.
Goldberg falsely claimed Reagan’s “tear down this wall” line was directed at the Germans.
“Now we’ve got to make a correction, because the ‘tear down the wall’ was Germany,” Goldberg interjected.
Perez’s reaction showed the dangers of these media fact checks.
“Oh. Sorry, sorry, sorry, yes,” Perez stated.
Americans trust figures in positions of authority to have their facts right.
A member of the press simply saying you are wrong was enough for Perez to back down and apologize for making a factually correct statement.
Goldberg claimed she was simply correcting Perez because of media critics who would claim the show allowed misinformation to go out over the air.
“But we knew where the enemies were,” Goldberg added. “But you know how they do us on this show, so I just wanted to make sure that we—”
Goldberg was right about her fears of misinformation.
But Goldberg was the one peddling fiction.
Co-host Ana Navarro had to step in and fact check Goldberg’s fact check and point out that Perez was correct and Reagan was telling the Soviets to tear down the Berlin Wall.
“It was the Soviet Union,” Navarro stated.
“It was the Soviet Union, that’s right,” Goldberg admitted.
