Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico Has a Wild Nickname and a Very Specific Reason Behind It

James Talarico is locked in a dead-heat US Senate race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton this fall.

A resurfaced 2019 legislative hearing clip now threatens to undercut his campaign message to worried parents.

The comment that earned him the nickname has resurfaced, and Texas parents are furious.

The 2019 Hearing Where Talarico Called Parents Abusive

Texas lawmakers debated House Bill 1910 back in 2019.

The bill would have shielded parents from child abuse allegations simply for declining to affirm their child's gender identity.

Talarico stood up to kill it.

"I think there are some folks that would think that if you deny your child's gender identity, that's incredibly harmful," Talarico told the committee.

Then he went further.

"And whether or not we label it with the term abuse, it's abusive for sure," he said.

That's not an academic theory from a faculty lounge.

That's a sitting Texas state representative telling parents, on the record, that raising their own kids could make them child abusers.

HB 1910 died in committee that year – but Talarico's position didn't.

Talarico Voted Against Parents Again in 2025

A stronger parental protection bill reached the Texas House floor in May 2025.

Talarico voted against it.

He also backed amendments treating a parent's refusal to affirm a child's gender identity as abusive conduct.

Six years after his first comments, nothing had changed.

Parents who question a school counselor or a doctor pushing gender transition were still the villain in Talarico's story.

How Talarico Became Talafreako

RNC chairman Joe Gruters slapped the nickname on Talarico this year, and it stuck.

Gruters called him "a creep" who thinks "God is non-binary" and wants "boys in girls locker rooms."

Talarico denied being vegan – but he confirmed he supports transgender surgeries for minors.

RNC spokesman Zach Kraft went further, saying "only perverts and pedophiles think about what is in little kids' pants as much as James Talafreako."

Talafreako isn't a cheap Trump-style insult invented out of thin air.

It's a nickname built entirely on Talarico's own words.

Colorado Democrats Called Parents a Hate Group Too

Talarico isn't the only Democrat treating concerned parents like the enemy.

Colorado state Rep. Yara Zokaie compared parent advocacy groups to the Ku Klux Klan during a 2025 hearing on a custody bill.

"We don't ask someone passing civil rights legislation to go ask the KKK their opinion," Zokaie told committee members opposing her bill.

Committee members applauded her.

Two Democrats, two statehouses, one message – parents who won't affirm a child's gender identity aren't parents worth listening to.

The Supreme Court Just Told Talarico He's Wrong

Talarico picked the worst possible year to keep defending this position.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Mirabelli v. Bonta this March that schools cannot hide a child's gender transition from parents.

The majority leaned on the Fourteenth Amendment's protection of parental rights, citing century-old cases like Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Society of Sisters that protect a parent's right to direct their own child's upbringing.

The justices affirmed that parents, not school officials, have the right to "direct the upbringing and education of children under their control."

That's the exact principle Talarico argued against in that 2019 hearing room.

Six justices just ruled parents are the primary protectors of their own kids, not state legislators, not school counselors and not James Talarico.

Talarico spent years building a record on the premise that government knows a child's identity better than mom and dad – and the nation's highest court just said the opposite.

Ken Paxton doesn't need to invent an attack ad here.

Talarico already wrote it himself, twice, in front of a committee microphone, six years apart.

Texas parents heading to the polls this November don't have to guess where James Talarico stands.
